switching out hay

I'm sure this has been posted, so my apologies but I have a question. I have a bigger hay area where my guinea goes to eat , pee/poop.

Then i have a hay rack, and some toilet paper rolls/bags with hay for him to rummage and play in. My first question is for the hay racks/rummage hay I was wondering for these how often the hay should be switched out? I notice right when I put fresh hay in he's all about it and then after a bit it's like he forgets its there or doesn't want anything to do with it. He'll go back sometimes to eat it but wanted to know any ideas on how I can make it more exciting or if I can keep the hay in there until he completely eats it? I just don't want to waste hay that isn't soiled or peed on.

second question, for the hay where he poops/pees and eats in each day I'll take out all the poop and soiled hay and then top it with fresh hay. I'll swap out the bedding in it every couple days. Want to make sure that sounds about right? thanks!

He may never completely eat every single bit of hay - It’s normal for them to pick out the bits they like and leave the rest. It’s just life with piggies I’m afraid - you are going to throw some hay away.

Most of us don’t use any form of hay racks because they stop them from being able to freely forage and can make it harder for them to eat. Most of us just have hay thrown on the floor or in trays which is then thrown away every day or two.
However what I would do is that you take the hay he leaves in the hay rack and simply throw it into the area he toilets. It’s still going to be thrown away anyway but he may still forage through it more once it is down in the ground.

For the second question; yes that sounds fine. Remove wet hay and bedding daily, any which is still dry can be left for another day

Mine have trays and loose hay. Every day I take the top hay, put it aside, get rid of the bottom hay then use the stuff I put aside as the new bottom layer rather than throwing it all away.
They have bath mats under the hay piles, these get changed every day or two. In the trays I use wood pellet litter. One boy keeps his for 5 or 6 days but Mr Swampy bum is every other day.

I give loose hay. It starts in a pile and then Mourne chucks it all round the place anyway, so long as it's dry I leave it there. He likes a pile to sleep in.

He eats the seed heads almost immediately, none of the good stuff gets ignored lol

Mine get their hay piled into the middle of the cage and into a paper bag, a hay house and a carrot cottage.
It gets played in, weed and pooped in, slept under and liberally strewn everywhere
