I have a 3 year old female, Willow who has been fine up until a few days ago when a big lump appeared on her neck/chin area. She also seems to be quite bloated. I took her to the vets and he said that he's not sure what it is. He checked in her mouth and all around and took her temperature and said he can't see any signs of infection she's still eating and drinking fine, she seems a little lethargic. He said there's quite a lot of protein in her urine. He said to keep feeding her as normal and he gave me baytril to give her 0.5ml twice a day. Has anyone come across this before or have any idea what this could be? I asked on the rabbit forum and a few people suggested tooth abscess but the vet couldn't see anything. I'll try and take a photo of her lump if that helps

A photo would be useful please.
It could be a tooth root abcess....it could be another condition called cervical lymphadenitis where the lymph nodes in the neck become infected and swollen and often result in an abcess. It could just be a harmless fatty lump.....(but they don;t normally suddenly appear as a large lump). Slightly concerned that your vet didn;t take a needle aspirate to try and find out exactly what it is.

The good thing is that she is on baytril.....but this is not necessarily the best drug for stubborn abcesses in the jaw area. Keep a close eye on the lump as if it gets any bigger you may need to go back to the vet as if it is an abcess it may need lancing and draining. I don;t know which vet you use but it might be worthwhile looking at our vet locator for your nearest cavy savvy one?

The fact she is quite bloated suggests she is not getting enough food into her and her guts are slowing down......please weigh her daily to monitor for weight loss and perhaps think about topping her up (our syringe feeding guide is here)

As she is on baytril you may also wish to consider giving probiotics 2 hours afterwards to help keep a balance of healthy bacteria in her intestines...

Also please monitor her poo output as you may find they become smaller/less frequent....another sign she is not getting enough food and may need some gut motility meds to keep her guts moving until she recovers.
