she was spitting it out but when I fed her at 4:30 this morning she did really well and took 6ml without spitting any out then I gave her another 6ml but most of that was spat out, she is chewing and I am doing it very slowly so it doesnt go into her lungs, the vet gave me the syringe I'm sure its 1ml and I have cut the end off. She has taken a good 6ml this morning and then had enough I have tried her with some veg but she is not interested and is still sitting hunched in the corner, how long before I may see any difference?

Have you had a look at this?

http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

That shows you the size of the syringe to use, you need one with the end cut off & filed smooth for the critical care food & one without the end cut off for water. Squeeze the syringe very slowly into the side of the mouth, careful not to aim towards the back of the throat, a little at a time, giving piggy time to swallow in between. Give a little water at the end of each feed.

Is she getting probiotics & pain relief from the vets? It sounds like she is in pain if she is huddled up, I would be thinking about taking her back to the vet if she doesn't improve.

For a piggie who isn't eating anything for themselves, you need to aim to get about 120 mls of syringe food in over a 24 hour period.

As she only wants to take a small amount at each serving, are you able to feed her little and often all day?

For now just keep getting as much food into her as possible. Don't look any further ahead than that When dealing with sick piggies it's best to just take each day as it comes.

This is horrible I am really upset she is not showing any signs that it is making a difference at all, the vet had her all day yestorday and he said that he didn't think she was in pain, he said that her gut had stopped working and that the reason why she was just sitting in one place was because she didn't want to eat and was giving up on life and I had to try to make her eat again. I am feeding her every two hours and keep putting food infront of her every hour or so i have tried grass from the garden and she did make a slight noise and tried to have a chew then just turned away ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

just to add does anyone know if the probiotic from pets at home is any good or not?

Yes its fine. Mix it in with the syringe food. It's not easy having to fully syringe feed a piggie but it can be done. You won't notice an immediate difference, but it will keep her alive. When she was at the vets yesterday did they get a decent amount of syringe food into her? I am becoming increasingly frustrated how most vets don't seem to have a clue how much syringe food a guinea pig needs.

What other medication is your piggie on? Is she on antibiotics? Zithromax is the very best for anything abscess related.

I didn't get the impression that they got a lot down her but they had her from 10:30- 6:00 and they said they had been doing it all day, she is on antibiotics but it's bytril, the wound it's self is healing rather nicely its just she is not eating, though she did have a slight nibble at some cumcumber at 3:30 and she had a poo so I'm slightly happier

RIP baby white passed away yestorday, I made the decision to end her suffering as I woke up and found her dragging herself across the cage and unable to lift her head, the vet said that she must have had other complications that we were all unaware of.
I shall always remember you and our last and very cherished moments together,
xxxxxxxxxxxx

((HUGS))- I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost a piggie under similar circumstances... she had an abscess on her jaw due to teeth issues and just never went back to eating. In her case, the vet felt that she had an infection down into the root that spread into the bone and she just couldn't beat it. RIP little piggie. 8...
