Sweep was neutered on 4th August and the vet told us after the op that they had been unable to remove the fat on one side that was attached to one of his testicles and he had to have an anti-inflammatory injection 3 days after the op as he was limping. When I picked him up today I noticed that he is really swollen and red where his testicle would have been. Will he have to have another op to remove this fat or just another anti-inflammatory injection?

I really dont know hun as nevr had my boars done when i had the.
Hopefully someone will be along to help you.
Good luck x

It's gone green and burst today 8.... Got the poor little mite booked into the vets this afternoon on the earliest appointment we could get. We have been told to wash it with warm salty water and he will probably need antibiotics. I don't know if Lulu coming into season last Wednesday for the first time and Sweep humping her quite alot has caused this lump so I'll have to ask the vet later

How did it go at the vet?

Post neuter abscess would be my pretty solid guess. These can happen months post neuter...an infection can brew for quite some time before any clinical symptoms (i.e. the swelling) occur.

Whether antibiotics are essential is up for debate, I have had three pigs recover from abscesses without antibiotics (one was on Baytril for a time, which did absolutely nothing, he eventually recovered from the abscess having not been on oral ABs for some weeks). One was also a post neuter abscess.

I have heard of pigs right at the other end of the scale with these abscesses, I recall a the boar of a member here, lovelygirl. Her pig was treated by Vedra for this abscess, and antibiotic beads were eventually stitched into the cavity in an attempt to heal it. The boar did recover.

You will need to keep the abscess open, in my experience I found it easier to do so when the abscess burst by itself but have got the hang of the incisions as well now. You need to squeeze the abscess from all angles, particularly the point lowest the ground (where the pus mainly collects) at least 2-3 times per day. I tend to keep going with the regular squeezing for at least three days after it seems "clear" - and by clear I mean either nothing comes out at all, or no pus but a little bit of blood.

If the abscess does turn out to be more stubborn, flushing the cavity with the antibiotic Flagyl (metronidazole) is one treatment approach.

Good luck!

The vet checked him over and it was an abcess. He gave that a good squeeze and nothing came out. The vet gave me baytril which Sweep has to have 0.2ml daily and hibiscrub to wash the area twice a day. Lulu's had to move into Daisy's cage next to him and Daisy's gone to Donna's to make friends with chestnut mini pig ready for when Fudge is tadpole free
