Hello,
Today I got back from staying in kent with a few friends for the weekend (my neighbors had been looking after the pets) and I got back late yesterday night, went to check on the piggies and Benny is limping and not using his left front paw:...
I decided to have a closer look at him in the morning. So I've just got up now to find that his left paw is really swollen! He doesnt seem to find it painful when I touch it or look at it but he doesnt put his weight on it. He also has a small cut (he caught his paw on the hayrack) but that happened a few days ago and it was healing up nicely so I cant see why that would be the problem. Could it be an infection?
I will give the vets a ring and see what they think, but I just wanted some advice from people on here. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be?
Many thanks xx

It sounds like it could be an infection, what bedding do you have him on? Could have got something poke the wound. See what the vets say but it could just be a case of a short course on some meds.

Almost had exactly the same problem with Stripe, who was bitten (accidentally after a panic attack by best friend, Parkin during floor time - long story!). The wound seemed to heal fine, but after a couple of days, swelled up and was hot. So we had a 4 day course of septrin (didn't work as although heat went, he wasn't putting any weight on it at all) and then a course of baytril plus probiotics (5 days) and long term metacam (30 days). The thinking was that it might have been an infection only, but unlikely as the first abs made no impact so we now think there was a crack or break in a small bone. No x-ray as that would have meant giving him a whiff of gas which I was unwilling to do, given that the only treatment is time and metacam. Three weeks on and he is much improving, putting some weight on the foot, although not consistently, but definitely no longer hopping as he was. Two more weeks metacam, by the end of which I am thinking that he will be fulled recovered.

So try abs first, and if they don't work, it could be a small broken bone, in which case rest and metacam should sort it.

HTH

Its an infection. We have him on metacam and baytril, and if it doesnt clear up then we'll take him back to the vets so she can have another look.
I've only had him a week and he's already cost me £53! :)) :x
Worth every penny though :)

Oh thank goodness it is not serious. I hope he gets better soon.

Just a thought, please monitor his pooping as baytril can upset their guts. You can get a probiotic for this, but you should watch out for a gut that is static as this can be dangerous. If he doesn't poop over the course of a day as normal, please phone the vet again...

Thanks for letting me know, I'll keep an eye on him.
