One of my boars has a swollen area where his testicles should have been. He has been castrated! Oviously I am taking him to the vets ASAP.

However, has any one had this in their guinea pig?

He is quite happy running around and eating.

I could be an infection or an abscess - they can come up within a year of the op.

Wishing you the best for your poor little boy!

No. It is bulging and sore at the moment for him.

One unpleasant possibility encluded then...

Wishing you and your boy the best for your visit to the vets!

How long ago was he neutered?

As Wiebke said abscesses can develop quite some time after the op, although most crop up quite quickly if they're going to. A reaction to the sutures used can lead to such symptoms if the pig is newly castrated.

Chocolate is fine. Had his abscess lanced.

Apparently it could have been a spike from the hay. I was told it was highly unlightly that it would have been his op. But it could be ruled out.

Anyway best news is Choccy is fine.

Thats great news. Poor wee man. Way to go Chocolate..

Good news. Bless him!
Hope all goes well for him now. Obviously keep a watchful eye over the wound. Has he been prescribed antibiotics also?

Good to hear the abscess has been lanced. Has the wound been left open to allow you to drain it over the coming days? Abscesses can be awful to clear up and usually require the pus to be squeezed out 2-3 times daily for a good 2-3 days - although some pigs are lucky enough that the initial lancing and draining is enough.

I'm glad that the abscess could be lanced and hope that Chocolate will heal off. Keep an eye on the wound; abscesses can be persistent and can come back again.

Thanks everyone. Chocolate is on antibiotics. The vet nurse said to keep the wound open and wash with salt water to avoid infection. His home currently consists of paper to allow the wound to drain.

Poor little thing.

Sounds very good advice from the nurse! :)
Abscesses do have a habit of reforming if the wound heals over too quickly. Then you are back to square one.
Hope all goes well from now on.
