Hi everyone,

My darling guinea pig Marlene has developed a swelling under her neck and took her to the vets last week to get checked out. The vet told me that some antibiotics should sort her out as it was a build up of fluid. 7 days later and the swelling is still there but a bald patch on the swollen part too now which appeared on Thursday. I took her back to the vet today and they have given me some antiseptic solution to wipe the bald patch with and have told me to go back in a few days for a ringworm test. Does anyone know if these are symptoms for ring worm, if not what else could it be? She doesn't seem to be suffering or in any pain. She is still eating and moving around as normal but I tend to worry about her as she can't tell me if she's in any pain. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their piggy? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

i am sorry i don't know what it could be.

i am sure someone on here will be able to help you.

if she is still eating, that is a good sign that she is not in to much pain

((( big hug ))) hope she feels better soon

Is the lump hard?,it could be an abcess. The neck is a very common place for these. If it is an abcess it needs to be lanced and drained. It is no good just giving antibiotics.

If the swelling is filled with fluid there could be a heart or lung problem, and the gp needs a diuretic.

Is there another vet you could go to?,this one does not sound very good with gps.

Hi Maryh,

Thanks for your reply. The swollen area is fluid like. I cannot feel a lump at all. The bald patch is getting bigger too and the bottom of her feet look very sore now too. I am really worried about her. I think i will have to find another vet as you say.

Hi Sally 2605,

You need to find a gp savvy vet quickly.,not easy I know because sadly they are few and far between. What area are you in?,someone may be able to help you find one.Are you able to trav el out of your area.?.

What you are describing is a build up of fluid from a disfunctioning kidney. The problem could lie in the kidney itself,or their could be a heart or lung problem. The gp needs a diuretic such as frusimide to clear the fluid, then she will have to be maintained on a diet high in veggies with diuretic properties, i.e. cucumber, celery, parsley, dandelion etc. You will also need to give banana as this has potasium which the diuretic will deplete.

Antibiotics and antiseptic wipes will not help. As for the sore feet,if they look wet at any time, wash the urine off with plain warm water and dry thoroughly.Put a barrier cream such as Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter on them twice a day.Any baby nappy rash cream will do as long as it does not contain alcohol, parabens or sles. The Waitrose one is chemical free.

really hoping marlene gets better soon. sending you hugs and cuddles from me and the girls from oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: i know how you feel about the lack of GP savy vets. you're lucky if you can find 1 in 1000 here in oz! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: sending hugs and prayers for you and marlene and hoping all goes well at the vet. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi all,

Thanks for all your support, it's been nice. I took Marlene to the vet and she had the fluid drained off her belly. I brought her home and fed her up on lots of veggies but the weight just kept dropping off her. I came homefrom work yesterday and she was having a fit snd then was unable to walk. It tore me to pieces to see her suffer like that so i made the decision to have her put to sleep :'( . The vet told me that she appeared to be having multiple organ failure and there was nothing they could do for her. She is now in peace and no longer in any pain. I had a good 3 years with her and she will be missed loads :'( . RIP Marlene. xx

P.S I live in Milton Keynes, does anybody know a good vet for future reference as i have another piggy and i would like to know she will have the best health care possible should she ever need it? Thanks.

Thanks sunshineand twinkle. I miss her loads, i just hope i have done the right thing :'(

The same thing happened to my new baby guinea pig. He just doesn't have the bald spot. I heard that you had to put yours to sleep. Now I'm really scared for mine. I hope I don't have to put him to sleep.

The bald spot is happening, or swelling? My guinea lost her hair around her right eye, and was diagnosed with ringworm. She's on an antibiotic. The hair is growing back in :D Good luck with yours!
