Hey guys,

My GP Hazel has had a problem on and off for the last year or so (she's almost 2 years old)

Her paw gets very swollen but it's NOT bumblefoot. She's had x-rays and there doesn't appear to be any problems.

I'm reluctant to take her to the vet, because she has become a very expensive pig (i know, i feel horrible saying it like that, but money is an issue for me) and I'm worried they are gonna put her through x-rays again and i really can't afford another $500 bill.

In the past we've given her some anti-inflammatory that the vet prescribed and it seemed to make it go away, but this time it wont go away. The paw itself looks normal, just swollen. No crust, corns or anything else weird, just oversized.

anyone have any suggestions?

Hello welcome to the forum. Poor Hazel, is she struggling to walk on it?
Can you put a photo on so we can have a look?

Hey,

Thanks for the quick reply. It's not the greatest pic, i didn't want to disturb her to bad. But as you can see, nothing funky, just the size.

She is limping on it, but eating and drinking normal. Spends most of her time lounging with it raised.

I see, it doesn't look red or anything, I'd wondered if she had a splinter in it.
I don't know what to suggest other than a vet trip I'm afraid.
Hopefully there will be more members on in the morning who can help (it's 2.15am in the UK)

Oh my!

well thanks for your input. It's only 9pm here in Canada.

yeah, it's really weird...it's happened a few times, but i feel like the vets are more guessing than anything. We gave her metacam all previous episodes and it seemed to go away, but this time we gave her some (had some left over) so only about 2.5 doses compared to the 5 that she got the previous times, and it hasn't gone down at all :(

I just hope she isn't in pain

How strange? Poor girl. It sounds like a mild (its not red and massively painful) but stubborn infection to me but its hard to tell. Is it hotter than the others? Has she been on any antibiotics? If she goes on to some antibiotics and it improves then it would point to an infection.

In the UK we would use Septrin or Baytril but it will require a trip to the vets.

The only other possible explanation is that she has another injury or something congenital which is making her walk or move awkwardly thus putting pressure on that paw, leg or joint and causing repetitive strain? That would explain why the metacam has worked up until recently as an anti-inflammatory...

Just my thoughts really...

Thanks guys,

Hazel went to the Vet yesterday, and it was more of the same. Since treating her with Metacam has helped in the past, they prescribed it again, along with gluclosamin that is suppose to help with her joints.

I'll update more in a few days

Update:

After 8 days of metacam the swelling went down and she's back to normal.

Hopefully her kidneys are ok :)
