Swollen toe

I've just been cleaning our our gp hutch and noticed that one of them had something stuck to his back foot. It was a big piece of megazorb that had got damp. I pulled it off and he squeaked a bit. On closer inspection, the toe that it was stuck to is really red and angry looking. It doesn't appear to be bothering him too much. He's walking ok, eating, etc,etc. I'm wondering whether the removal of this piece of bedding might help to heal it, or whether I should take him to the vets. I don't think they're open until Monday anyway. Is there anything I should be doing until then, or should I just keep an eye on it and book him in for Monday.

Any thoughts appreciated. I'm a bit of a novice at this sort of thing. This is the first time we've had any sort of problem!

I had something similar happen a few years back. I can only go by previous experience, but here's what I did. I bathed it in cool boiled water with a bit of dissolved salt in it and then dry off with a clean tissue or cloth. I put a bit of antiseptic cream on it. You can buy animal ones at pet shops, but I've used ordinary tea tree cream to good effect. I did this about three times a day. Keep an eye on it until the vets are open and if things have got worse, take him in.

Sorry to be thick, but how did you bathe it? Just with a cotton wool pad or something?

Never done anything like this before!

If you have a small, shallow dish, fill it up with an inch of water (saline or diluted Povidone Iodine also an option) and hold the pig above it with his foot in the dish. A very wet cotton wool ball/pad will help, but won't 'soak' the foot per se.

Bepanthen (baby nappy rash cream) is a good cream to apply after it has been cleaned and dried.
 
I did manage to get a cotton wool pad and drip it through his paw. Hopefully that will do the job. He didn't seem to squeak or pull it away.
