Hi everyone,

As you may be aware Pebbles and Pringles were at the vet a few days ago because they've been slightly snuffly, wern't very active, and were squinting with their eyes. The vet prescribed us with septrin to be given twice daily as he said the lungs did sound a little tight but other than that they seemed in good health - of course, when they're at home they act different which is what I mentioned to him.

They have been on the septrin for 3 days now - 0.5ml once at 9am and once at 9pm. I have noticed a slight improvement in their snuffling already after 3 days, but they're still squinting and kind of closing their eyes every so often. It's almost like they half close them, and open them again (if you get what i'm saying)

Which brings me onto my next examination.. All 3 guinea pigs including Porche have been doing the squinting, and I've also noticed a vast amount of scratching and foot-biting. I have been planning to treat all 3 with mites after Pebbles and Pringles have finished on their antibiotics. I've been worrying for so long that the meds arn't working and that there is something wrong with all 3 - But do you all think it's mites? I can't see any on them but they are showing signs.

Please tell me what you think, and also write down more mite symptoms so I can identify.

Thank you all!

If it is mange mites you cannot see them they are under skin and irritate sometimes to the point the pig draws blood. There are then lice either static or moving. With moving lice you can usually see them moving if you part the hair on the rump or you can see a dandruff. Static lice you usually see bits of black down yhe hair shaft again around rump or ear area. Check out the pictures on guinea lynx website

They don't have any hair loss or bleeding although there is white specks which I just believed to be dandruff.

They are very irritated as they get stopped in their tracks and have to turn round quickly to bite/scratch their back and feet. Do you think the squinting and eye closing could be due to this.. as its irritation or possible pain? We are definitely treating all 3 pigs once pebbles and pringles have finished their course of septrin.

If there is dandruff it is a possibility they shouldnt be itching excessively if nothing wrong. I would see a vet first to get proper diagnosis as different treatments are required for different types of hitchhikers
