Yesterday we came out of the vets happy to know that our piggie Pippa had passed her bladder stone and no longer needed surgery. She was already on antibiotics as at first the vet suspected it was a UTI. Once we did find out it was a bladder stone she told us to continue the course of antibiotics. This had proved problematic for us as the antibiotic is baytril which I've read to be particularly hard on the gut. My two piggies has been squabbling all week as Pippa is trying to get Maisys poo and is digging in her bum for them. Its gotten so bad we've had to split them up. The vet gave us some probiotocs yesterday as she told is even now she's passed it to carry on with the antibiotics. She told us to sprinkle the probiotocs onto her food but it seems that Pippa doesn't like it and has stopped eating anything with the probiotocs on them. Is it ok to mix in with some water and syringe it to her? Were also considering stopping the antibiotics as despite was the vet said it is becoming a bad problem. The reason she told us to still use them is because she May of also had a bladder infection but she's been on the antibiotics for almost two weeks now, and they haven't said anything about a bladder infection before this. She's passed the stone and is healthy so surely it's ok to stop particularly as its causing lots of fights between my two normally loving guinea pigs

It is great news that an operation is not necessary! What a relief that must be to you!

Yes, you can syringe probiotics. Do so 1-2 hours after giving a dose of antibiotics.

Please continue with the baytril. The irritation from a bladder stone can cause an infection and also frequently an inflammation/thickening of the bladder walls (cystitis). Is Pippa on anti-inflammatories like metacam as well as just baytril?

Please consider using a glucosamine based food supplement to additionally protect the bladder walls, like cystease or vegetarian glucosamine for the foreseeable future. Alternatively, you can try barley water, made from boiling pearl barley in some water, strain the gloopy water and syringe it, as much as she will take; this also helps to coat and soothe the bladder walls.

I think that we have already given you the links for a low calcium diet to try and prevent a reoccurrance?

l would ask your vet about an antibiotic resistance developing

It hasn't stopped them from eating their nuggets, i'm thinking about adding it to the water :) The vet was surprized about the fibre plex though as she said she accidentally got some in her mouth once and said it was very gritty.

none of mine have ever had fibreplex but i always thought it would be really smooth for some reason.

mollie has had it in one of her bottles before and she enjoyed that. i would try it that way again but i just know benjie would take over and drink the lot  :))

No she's not on any anti-inflammatories, and thankyou I will try and find the glucosamine food supplement.
