Some of you may have read my previous thread regarding my guinea pig's swollen leg. We took him to the vets on Wednesday and the vet believed it was just a trauma. We are carrying on with his metacam (for cats) but need to syringe feed him water and "poop soup" as he is eating his pellets by himself as he still has his appetite. We just need to know how often to syringe him the water and "poop soup" in order to keep him healthy. He is booked in for an X-Ray tomorrow to find out what exactly is wrong with his leg.

Thanks.

just gonna read your original thread now

Okays :) Just caught up.

Is he eating his veggies okay?

How is the pooing situation as on your other thread it mentioned possible impaction?

I would give poo soup as a pro-biotic once daily if he is not on antibiotics (but has been on recent baytril) or if he is on AB's still then poo soup 1 hour after the Anti-Biotic. To make poo soup use the poo of a healthy piggie and mix with a little water.

Is he drinking? There would only be the need to syringe water to him if he wasn't drinking.

When syringing any food to piggies always use a 1ml syringe and go in at side of mouth. Syringe slowly so as to be careful not to aspirate... we have a syringe feeding guide that @lisaali have linked to above that shows you how to prepare a syringe by cutting the end off, this makes syringe feeding easier and you are less likely to fire bits off fast into the mouth reducing the risk of aspiration.

For water use a 1ml syringe with the end on

He's eating fine when he can get to the food but as his leg is so painful now he doesn't want to move.

He's not impacted anymore, that seems to have gone away now so that's fine but he can't get to his poo to eat it to receive the nutrients, hence the need for poop soup.

He would drink if could get to his bottle but again he's not moving around much, meaning we've had to start springing him water.

Thanks for the info on when to syringe feed and the tips you've given.

Seen as you're from Wolverhampton do you know of Wombourne vets as that's where we go? Just wondering if you know how much an X-Ray would cost?

Hi Ross.

Poo soup is a great idea then, if he is unable to eat his own. In this instance I would suggest a few times a day. Maybe worth getting a probiotic like avipro plus too, piggies love that.

You may find with water if you offer the syringe he will take it in his mouth then slowly syringe. Our piggy Cookie enjoys this :))

Yes, we use the vets at Wombourne on Rookery Road and see Rosie, who are you seeing? She is great with piggies. They use a digital x-ray, but I can't remember the cost, it will show any trauma etc... so well worth getting it done.

I am very sorry that the leg is not yet better!

Poo soup you give about 1-2 hours after a dose of antibiotics, the same as probiotics. As much as he will take.

Water you offer several times a day, again each time as much as he will take - water intake varies between piggies and the actual weather/climate. As long as he eats his veg normally, there is no danger of him becoming badly dehydrated. ;)

Hi Billy,

Okay thanks for the help.

Yes we're also seeing Rosie. We've got an X-Ray booked but just wanted to know of the cost. No worries though, just want to get it over with now and see what the actual problem is.
