Syringe feeding

So still nothing and I think Simon is on holiday! 😪 am giving a mixture of veg to see if he’ll eat anything but the only thing he wants is the syringe! Slightly strange suggestion that I’ve thought of... if he has become reliant on the syringe (which I think he might have done because he’ll sit there and eat it happily and will chew on the cage bars if he’s not getting any!) would it be a bad idea to get/borrow(?) another guinea pig in the hope that he sees that guinea pig eating properly and decides to do the same? I’m getting desperate!

Could you try him on some herbs perhaps. Something tasty like dill, fennel, mint or flat leaved parsley. My Ted is a dental piggie and goes to see Simon and he absolutely loves those herbs. He also likes Bistro salad, especially those little sticks of beetroot. You need to find something that gets him interested in eating himself. good luck x

I’m trying mint and thyme at the moment and he just turns his nose up at it. I’ll see if I can grab some of the bistro salad. He’s down to 700g and I’m just running out of ideas :-( hes lapping up syringe food and seems very lively - running round the room when he’s let out - but just refuses to eat!

I am so sorry your boy is off his food. Whenever one of mine has been off veg I've found picked grass has been an appetite stimulant and once finished has got them into the hay. The other hits are dandelion leaves and carrot. I take some carrot strips off with the potato peeler which makes it easy for them to eat.

I gave him some picked grass and dandelions yesterday but still no interest - I’m wondering if his teeth have grown back badly again and he genuinely can’t eat but he seems to be going backwards which is sad.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope he rallies soon, poor boy.

He was doing alright and eating syringe food happily until today and has only had 60ml since this morning. 😪 I’m trying him on emeraid at the moment but he’s had 16ml and decided enough is enough.

Bless him. Such a worry for you though. I found a little bit of liquid feed would encourage Bracken to have a bit of hay for himself so every little bit helped! Bracken realy liked the Science Recovery one it had to be the Recovery plus that's more expensive of course.

I'm sorry you are having a difficult time.i had a dental piggie that would take a few steps forward and a few steps back.he was fed syringe feed for ten months it can be a steady slow progress.i hope he recovers soon.x

Oh really! And did he recover? I need some positivity about this situation haha. x

Have you tried using mushed nuggets for syringe food? I never use Critical Care or any of the other recovery foods, as I find the piggies enjoy the mushed nuggets so much more.

That’s what I have been using, he hated cc! Though now I’ve started the emeraid, he’s not even sniffing the nugget mash 🙄 do you know how much emeraid I should be giving?

I would say you'll be aiming for the same regardless of what you syringe. I always aim for about 100 ml -120 ml of syringe food for a piggy who isn't eating.

Ooo I’ve bought some more nuggets, that might peak his interest - thank you! X
