Most of you have had to give their pig/piggies medicine with a syringe, right? and i'm just interested to know whether you find it hard to syringe them it.

I've had piggies where they'd been given some medicine that we have to give in a syringe and i used to leave it to my dad to do, because it just freaked me out lol and they used to struggle abit and it sometimes used to take a few attempts for my dad to get the syringe in their mouths but he did do it in the end. And what really puts me off is the syringe is all dirty afterwards. Yuck!

So i just wanted to know whether you find it hard to syringe your piggies and do they struggle because they think you are hurting them etc lol?

I have only had to syringe feed one baby piggie medicine and he loved it.. He would suck onto the end of the syringe even when he was empty.

I guess it depends on what is in the syringe and how sick the pig is.
If they really don't like it, its best to wrap them in a towel to stop them struggling.

Bubbleberry was fine when she was on baytril. I just stuck it in the corner of her mouth and squirted it in quite quick. I suppose it depends on how tame your piggy is?

I've syringed most things lol! I find it very easy these days, once you get the hang of it i think its ok unless you get an unbelievably unco-operative piggy! I just wrap them tightly in a towel and syringe small bits at a time into the side of the mouth, trick is to be firm and quick without hurting them. If you are nervous and stressing out, it will only stress the pig. I think as long as you make sure the pig is swallowing and dont put too much in its mouth at a time there should be any mess.

I've syringed a few, i always wrap them in a towel; some take to it kindly others don't realise it's for their own good.
Lottie would lick the syringed mix off the end of a 50ml syringe, Howie preferred his off a spoon & i was always armed with baby wipes :)

I agree:)

I've never had to syringe my guinea pigs but I have had to do it to my cat and that was hard enough - his wee face would just crumple up because it was so disgusting. I think it would be really difficult to syringe the guinea pigs because their faces are so little.

I think it depends how ill they are, or how much they need the food / water you are syringing. The ones I've had to syringe fluids and pro-biotics to have always seemed very glad of it, and even bite the syringe and won't let it go, wanting more! :)) - the Layby boys got sort of addicted to it, I had to wean them off and even now they'll come after a syringe if someone else is getting it. Junkies!

We had to syringe feed six baby guinea pigs that had lost their mothers a few years ago and they used to fight over who was having the syringe next - they were so funny to see.:))
