That's lovely Suzy, I am so glad it's helped. Brilliant to hear the boar is doing well now. :)

Elijah's drooling has eased off for now, which is good. He was hooting for a couple of hours earlier but that has stopped again. Other than that nothing has changed, feeding him every 2-3 hours as he won't take more than 15ml at a time.

sorry to hear Elijah is worse today. Dipstick suggests it might be renal. any chance he might have diabetic nephropathy? the fact there is no trace of blood in his wee is reassuring.
could the antifungals, diuretics or nonsteroidals be causing toxicity to his kidneys - it can happen occasionally in humans, don't know about piggies?
if only you could check his blood pressure that might give you a better idea, but i can't imagine a guinea pig sized BP machine!

Things are going ok with Elijah, don't want to jinx everything (seen too many pigs improve then crash) but little man is definitely better than he was this morning.

No more drooling, no more hooting. Not puffed up, no sunken eyes. Peeing/pooping fine. Symptoms remaining are loss of appetite and a slushy feeling tummy.

He nibbled a bit of hay earlier but no real interest or effort in it. He can eat, just not interested in eating. Still reluctant on the syringe feeds, although he is now pushing me about with a cheeky glint in his eye, as opposed to just fighting the feeds.

Now I am less worried, but brain is more scrambled, early night I think. :)
 
Mostly back to himself thanks Suzanne, he is eating hay and drinking by himself, not interested in pellets or veg yet so still needing some syringe feeds. No wiser as to the cause of it all though, kidneys are just one possibility.

Ah well, at least he's back on his feet again now, so to speak.

Hi

I have found one of the best shampoos for fungal infections is Sporal-D, its a horse shampoo but works very well on guineas.

Used in addition to the Iodine this combination has a very good clear-up record.

Also when a fungal infection is noticed on the skin, ie the hair can easily be pulled out, it is also better to compleatly remove the hair in the infected area buy running it under warm water and gently pulling all the hair out. This is because the fungal spores are down in the hair folical. This will also help stop the infection going Systemic.

Systemic fungal infections can and do often result in sudden death of the piggy so should be treated as a mater of urgency.

Elijah is very up and down. He was pretty much right as rain on Sunday, so no meds for him on Monday day. But last night he was drooling again, so gave him a diuretic, drooling stopped. Eating fine the last couple of days so off the syringe feeds at least.

This is one for Vedra now, fluid seems to keep building up in him, going to have to hope Vedra will get to the bottom of it. Systemic fungal is still one possibility as it can mimic other conditions and lead to such symptoms, so it may end up coming back to the topic of this thread again. Heart is another possibility.

Will update on Scottish patient in his thread next. :)
 
I really hope Elijah pulls through for you.

I know I keep saying this, but Holly is doing exactly the same thing at the moment - intermittent dro.oling and all. She seems slightly perkier on the Lasix...
 
Hi laura,

my guinea pig charlie has become ill recently and I spoke to vedra last night and she diagnosed him with systemic fungal infection. He really is quite poorly at the moment, he wont eat anything I have to shringe feed him a recovery food. Vedra has told me to get nystatin and an antifungal shampoo. She also said something about plucking him? If you have any tips to get him going again its much appreciated :) I just want him to be better now! :(

Hi Faye, I am sorry I couldn't help, I have had to take some time out from the forum.

Just wanted to update on this. Elijah did respond well to Lasix (Furosemide) each day, and as he was drinking well, I maintained him on this. Urine test results are now reading normal.

He has been seen by Vedra today, she has checked him over and given his history and the way the problem keeps recurring (every 2 months since March) she has prescribed Nystatin (one drop, 3 times daily) and when that is finished, a course of Daktarin Oral Gel.

I just hope this clears it up once and for all. Thankfully Errol is ok, he was also seen by Vedra for another reason so I shall update his thread next.

Eli is due his last dose of Nystatin today. A note that might be useful (or might not!) to others - the dosage detail of "1 drop" I was very unhappy with, so I have been dosing with 0.05ml, which is a reasonable measurement of 1 drop. So same amount, just different way of measuring. It has made my life so much easier.

Once Eli has his last dose of Nystatin, he begins three weeks of Daktarin Oral Gel.

On the whole he seems to be absolutely fine. He and Errol have been trying once again to have serious discussions over dominance, never successful because the nutters just end up popcorning like loons. :))
