ScruffyPig

Hi, I am completely new to guinea pigs. I just aquired one from a friend because they no longer really wanted him...I am very familiar with animal care but these little guys are new to me. He is a male around a year old and he seems to have sticky bealy(the yellow clear fluid from your skin) material caked on his skin just above his tail(where a tail should be if they had one I guess)& on the insides of his back legs. I know she had bathed him and I considered that she may have not rinsed him well enough and that irritated the skin. Today I bathed him as he had a bit of a poopy hair on his back end and I found this area in question along with the fact he seemed to have fecal impaction....at this point I am thinking omg what did I get myself into? So I cleaned him, removed the impaction and clipped all the hair from his hind end(he is a long haired guy). I applied coloidial silver to the area. I have been reseaching all of this and the tail goo is the only thing I haven't found anything on. Does anyone have any advice or ideas for me? I am also thinking, am I going to be stuck dealing with the fecal impaction thing for the rest of his days....I really have to admit I don't know if I am up for that. Sorry this is so long and thanks in advance for any of your advice.

Seems like to me that its his grease gland. But more people will be on in a few hours that can help more!

Thanks

hehehe I didn't know Ronnie Milsap could be so helpful for guinea pig problems-that was cute!
Thank you for the lead on this, I was on that site I don't know how I missed that...I am pretty sure this is what it is now. He is a cute little begger, but his hind end is nothing but trouble! I had no idea they could be so high maintenance in that regards!
So it is normal for him to have this greasy bum? it was very difficult to clean and he was not at all thrilled with me doing it LOL Does it require cleaning all the time?

I have personally never had one with it. I think you're supposed to clean it with something like Dawn that takes grease off dishes. There is a thread on here somewhere where there was great advice on dealing with it. I will look it up for you! ;)

:(|) Well atleast you got a laugh out of my technical issue! :red :red

My boys regularly have a 'bum bath' and boy do they hate it! he he. I rub the grease gland with swarfega for about 2 - 3 minutes (some people use fairy liquid) then dunk their bums in water, and finish off with a lovely Gorgeous Guineas bum wash. If they need the whole shampoo, I do that at the same time, but my boys are short haired piggies, so I don't bath them that often. xx

Sophie just beat me to it! Yup, it would be fairly unlikely but not impossible to have impaction at just one year old. If he is long haired he may be more prone to the poop matting up the hair around his back end so trimming it back is a great idea as it'll also reduce any risk of fly strike as well as matting and it's so much easier to keep clean and groomed.

I have all boys and four of them in particular have very persistant grease gland "fun". Our Leo's gland gets greasy within a fortnight or so after washing it, I can't keep up with it sometimes!

I mentioned it to a fellow piggie slave a while back who recommended for very stubborn grease glands to VERY GENTLY use a soft bristle toothbrush in small circles with a bit of Swarfega or a small drop of washing up liquid, but only a small bit as it's pretty harsh on the skin, but gets to the grease wonderfully. Then finish with a nice gentle shampoo, www.gorgeousguineas.com are UK based but ship abroad if you don't live here and have wonderful stuff especially made for pigs with no unnecessary chemicals.

Thanks Everyone:)

Thanks for all the advice and links, I have read them all and now know more about guinea pig bottoms than I thought possible LOL I really appreciate the help, this is a great site for info!
Cheers
