Adult Guinea Pig
I have been meaning to post this for a while, but never got round to it until I pick up a free-ad piggy today.
I have noticed that alot of people are taking on free-ad piggies or directing people to piggies on free-ads when they are looking for a new piggy. I'm not saying this is wrong but I think people need to be aware that of some things before taking piggies from the free-ads.
Today I went to fetch a piggy from the free-ads, that was posted on here, she had fell out with her siblings and her owner needed to find her a new home. I have collected her and I think she has ringworm, there is only the smallest spot on her face which I didn't notice until I went over her when I got her home. Luckily I picked her up on behalf of the rescue so all her vets treatment will be paid for and she is in quarentine.
This is only a small thing which can easily be treated but I have noticed on here, people collecting free-ad piggies and bonding them with their pigs the same day. Now I am sure that 99% of these piggies are heathy but what if you get the 1% that isn't is it really isn't worth risking your own piggies health just so they can have a friend the same day. That goes for piggies from pet shops too. They may appear healthy but you never know what they may have. I believe quarentine is essential for any new arrival.
Also people tend to take free-ad piggies because they feel sorry for them, I know it's hard but sometimes you do have to walk away, if you can't afford them or your current animals are going to suffer then you really shouldn't take them.
One last thing is I really do think if people are looking for a new piggy, good rescues should be the first place to look. At least the piggies will be health checked, and you will have support from the rescue for the rest of that piggies life. You are also helping lots of piggies not just the one you take as it leaves the hutch empty for the next needy pig, although they are never empty long.
I'm not saying don't take in free ad pigs but just think about it carefully before you take them.
