Hi, it's been a while since i've been on here and feel like that 'friend' who only calls when they want something.... sorry!
we are planning to take our boys on holiday this year which will mean a 4-6 hour car journey and i'm after some advice as to how best to transport them. we rent a cottage from a friend who has said we can use the cage that they use for their tortoises when they are there, which brings me to some other advice i need, if the cage is cleaned with pet disinfectant will that be ok? are their any diseases that could pass between pigs and tortoises? the appeal of this is less to put in the car (the OH doesn't do traveling light) taking larry and tufty in a pet carrier, would this be ok or would it be better and less stressful if we left them in thier cage?, i had planned to take toys etc from home for familiar smells etc. i guess i'm worried that if we had a accident and they were in thier cage they could get really thrown about, atleast with a carrier i could secure them better with seatbelts and they would have less space to be flung around.
cheers, Mel

I would give them as much room as possible considering its a long drive, I'm not sure if diseases can be spread between the two - I'm sure a good clean of the cage would do though!or even just do bring them in the own cage, this would be less stressful for them!

The best advice i can give is buy a cat carrier.. this way you can attach a water bottle on the front as they will need that as well as food, also a cat carrier can be nice and cosy with some blankets/towels and cosy beds if you have any.
My piggies always travel in a cat carrier together because it gives them more room, my old piggy carrier is a bit too small now and makes them pratically sit on top of eachother ! rolleyes
hope you have a good holiday (:

many thanks, i've looked into the disease thing and it does seem thats ok provided the cage is clean. the cat box seems the best idea, that way the OH can sit them on her lap and talk to them all the way! this may mean my driving doesn't get moaned about! we will be stopping at the in laws half way there so they can have a good run around their kitchen!
thanks again,

When I take mine on holiday they go about 6 hours each day max, with stops every 2-3 hours to give them a break from the movement and let them stretch their legs (and have a bite to eat and drink). I think it's important to have them in carriers so they dont risk getting thrown around, even going round roundabouts can put a lot of stress on a piggies body.

My very clever boys blogged about their trips to Scotland and Devon, you can read them here under "Tales from the Hutch" http://guineapigging.wordpress.com

I realised that I'm not supposed to put links in my posts. I'm sorry I've spent the last half hour tryng to work out how to contact a moderator to apologise and failed miserably. Please would a mod remove them and this post. Thank you.
