All of my previous guinea-pigs were very clean, well-groomed ladies and gentlemen. But not Machynnleth. She is a practising vagabond.
Whenever she wees or poops, no matter where she is or how much space she has around her, she has to lay in it. The state of her sometimes I'm convinced she rolls in it. She also walks through it.
She dribbles (practising St Bernard). If she has eaten grass there are green streaks either side of her mouth. Orange streaks if she has eaten carrot. Brown if she has eaten and dry pellet food. Then she goes on to groom herself and there are a variety of coloured streaks throughout her fur.
The same thing happens when she eats apple. Or when she sits on it. You can't see the apple juice but it's presence is evident when tufts of her fur are sticky and defy gravity.
I tried her on grapes, she doesn't like those and sits on them. More stickyness.
I once went into the garden and found her sat and grimacing. A slug was crawling all over her and despite her obvious displeasure she made no attempt to remove it.
Surprisingly, she grooms herself much more often and with more vigour than my other piggies ever did. However, she fails to put her fur back the way it was after running her teeth or nails through it, or, she can't because of all the fruit juice.
Most times when she is picked up an "EEEEEEEWWWWWWW!" resounds throughout the house
Please tell me, because I have to know, are/were any of your piggies...well...scruffy? Do they grow out of it? ;D
