Guinea-Tia-Flossie

Here I am going to tell you all how to take great Guinea Pig photos. I will tell you the basics on how I take my pictures.

Equipment and Setting Up
OK, so apart from the obvious (a camera) you may need a tri pod or something to rest your camera on to get your photos straight.
Find an area with lots of light, and a sturdy surface like a table or chair.

Backgrounds
The things you can use for backgrounds are endless. Sheets, towels and walls all make great basic backgrounds. Although be creative, use a piece of wrapping paper to create something bright, or use props to add interest.
For example this picture of Flossie was taken with a purple towel as the background

Taking the picture
If you have a guinea pig that likes to run around and never stays still you may need another person to make sure he doesn’t run off or hurt himself. It can be tricky keep an eye on your guinea and taking pictures at the same time.
Pictures are better when your guinea pig looks happy, so wait until he is comfortable in his surrounding before taking any pictures.
Then it’s as simple as point and click!

Photoshop
This may seem a little complicated but I’ll try and keep it simple. (This part is for those of you who have digital cameras)

So you’ve got your pictures on your computer and they are too dark or too bright. Photoshop can fix these things simply.
Firstly open your picture in Photoshop. I think you’ll all agree this is a great photo of Guinea but it’s too dark

So, first of all you need to click on Image at the top of Photoshop, this is a drop down menu so then you need to click on Adjustments which is another drop down menu, so click on Auto Levels and this will brighten up your picture.
Too bright? Click on Edit at the top of photoshop, and then click on Fade Auto Levels, then just play about until the photo looks good.
And viola, you get this……

One last thing
Photos are great when you capture Guineas just being Guineas, you know eating, sleeping and being silly.
I love to have days where I keep my camera by my side. You never know when that one in a million photo will come along, I spent all day watching Guinea and Maddie in their run and managed to get this picture of them trying to sleep in their pigloo.

Or this one of Flossie and Beau, when I had them on the sofa just playing with them

Sorry lol. Although they are just the basics, I could go on forever but it would just confuse everyone haha you can edit out piggy poo on photoshop too though ;D

oh I love your photos, hubby has just bought a new digital camera so will be taking pics soon and we will be using your tips ;)

Thanks thats great advice
I think i had better put all my animals in front of the comp to read the instructions first though ;D

Thanks for this post.

I'm a photographer. I mostly do school photography and have never had trouble catching that great shot of any child. I have tried many times to photograph my piggies and they have me defeated! One actually tried to bite me over it. :embarrassed:

I'd rather eat bugs than have another go at it. xx0

Maybe when they're more comfy with us they won't mind so much.

I'd like any more tips you have.

Jeanette is a wonderful photographer, very talented and a lovely person too O0

Post a question and i'm sure she'll help you once she wakes up ;) ;D ;D ;D

awwww your piggies are just trying to help you take the photos ::) ::) good luck have another go soon love :) :)

You're absolutely right, Glynis........she is a fantastic photog. I'm glad she's willing to share tips. Some photogs. are tight lipped and won't share their secrets.

Thank you for taking the time to give us those tips! I love your photos, they are excellent.

That's great advice and those are great pictures! That should help me a lot with my rescue so now whenever anybody asks for a picture of a pig it'll look more professional! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the great tips - especially on making pics seem brighter on Photoshop. Wasnt sure how to do that!

Your photo's are brill - Ive seen some of yours before on this site... didnt realise you had taken them yourself. What a pro! Looks as though you took them to a proper studio

Thanks again  O0    PS  I just love little Beau! What a sweetie

Can I ask what kind of a camera you are using please?

I dont seem to get images like that with my Canon digital camera so i wondered if you used a flashy one

Great pigtures

LOL mines always does a poo when I'm about to take a piccy of it lol

You have the cutest guineas! I melted completely when I saw them, I was like, "awwwwwwwwwww, that is so sweet!"
I have no talent whatsoever with photography, although Koko has a natural 'air' about her that is perfect for the camera! She always poses just so.. its so cute! I just need to figure out how to scan photos into the computer..

I want to also add that if you don't have Photoshop or a great camera then natural light is your best friend for getting wonderfully bright pictures of you pigs! I brought Boomer & Athena outside onto a wicker table with my boyfriend and we got some absolutely gorgeous photos of them and the photos barely needed editing as the natural lightening worked perfectly! I got about 150 snaps of them that were wonderful :]

Here are the two in action:

Also, don't be put off if you end up with loads of blurred photos etc - For every 100 pictures I do snap of my pigs, only about 40 of them will actually be useable. You'll find that, after a while, your pig will start enjoying taking their photos taken. A good tip for getting them to look at the camera is to simple keep on calling their name and talking to them. You'll be surprised how many photos I've gotten of Fox just by saying "Come on Foxyloxy, look at the camera now!" O0

If anyone needs any more help taking photos, editing photos, getting photos onto the computer and so on, definitely drop me a message or something - I'm always happy to help! :]

They are the CUTEST guinea pigs Skylark!

Thank you! Unfortunately Athena (the one on the right) died suddenly a few months ago with no warning :[

We got another pig, an adorable girl called Beppe, to move in with Boomer. I'll have to show off photos of those two soon! :]

Doesnt the flash on the camera scare them? Or do you turn it off? I'm hopeless at taking photos, but Koko just happened to be 'posing' when I took the pic in my avatar. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: So sorry about Athena.... :'(

Have you got any tips for taking photos of piggies with black faces ? or all black fur? ..................... it's almost impossible for me to take them with any sort of detail

I love the pics! and the pigs for that matter  but i dont have a very good camera so i dont think it would work...well, maybe... 98)

I'd like some tips on taking pictures of black guinea pigs too! My black one has red eyes, and in most of the pictures you can't see any of her features, except her glowing eyes that make her look evil!
Can anyone help please?

If you have a digital camera there is a setting on some for red eye reduction.... also if you upload them you can fiddle about with colour on the computer.... i use hp image :D

Thanx
Red eye reduction works a bit, but they still glow like she's possessed!
