The boys are currently in a Nero 3 it's made up as follows -

2 layers of kitchen roll all across the bottom

2 layers of newspaper

3 or 4 inches of woodshavings

extra hay in their sleeping area

At present we're completely emptying their cage every other day so you can imagine the amount of shavings we're getting through (and the amount of rubbish we're now putting out every week). They pee in specific areas but tend to poo wherever they happen to be at the time!

I like the ease of cleaning with the woodshavings but not the amount of rubbish I'm now throwing away - is there anything else I could use instead?

I have cut up fleeces in the bedroom for mine, it is much easier to clean out than the shavings bit, then just shake off the poops each morning, and put a clean layer of fleeces in. I put them in the washing machine in a pillow case to wash. I am considering replacing shavings with fleeces. (These are old fleeces that were coats with zips, buttons cut off etc. very cheap and very snuggly) I hope no one is going to say there is something wrong with this, they seem to love it. If I am doing anything wrong, tell me please! x

My 3 piggies are in a Nero 3 (Basil) and Nero 4 (Marigold and Lavender) and I do pretty much the same as you although I have a thick layer of hay on top of the shavings, and I clean out completely on alternate days, so with the 2 cages you can imagine how much rubbish I put out. But they love making nests in the shavings, and bury themselves into the hay .... so I stick with it until the Council in their wisdom one day decides that 20+ sacks of waste a week is excessive.

Hi Ms Fi and welcome to the forum. I would definitely consider swapping to fleece/vetbed as it is much cheaper in the long run and there is a lot less waste. There are quite a few threads on the forum about alternative bedding.

i have a c&c cage with pro fleece, but i used to have a Nero 3 which also i used profleece in. my piggy had an allergy to woodshaving etc and it was just so messy in the house.

Vet bed/ profleece all the way.

I am thinking of changing from wood-shavings in my piggie's bedroom to fleece, so thank you moonie8404 for the link.

I will also have a look in e-bay as that was another suggestion that I had picked up for this forum.

Ms_Fi, I also use newspaper, shavings and hay in the bedroom. Newspaper and shavings in the "living room".

My Council have supplied me with a green wheelie bin which I am allowed to put the wood-shavings and old hay, plants, cardboard into, but not the newspaper though.

It is great to look on here and get lots of tips and new ideas!

I used vet bed with the dogs all the time so I'll def give that a go. At the moment they're still on woodshavings with hay and shredded paper in the bedroom area - Big Red is happily buried under the pile and whenever you look at the cage all you can see is the hay/paper moving!

Will have around and see what colour vetbed I can get for the boys - will have to be something that doesn't clash with the decor in the lounge.

I hated vetbed poop got squidged into it never again. When I had my boars neutered I used the terry nappies that I had they were so much better than vetbed for piggies:))

my indoor cage

mine are on newspaper then shavings then a healthy layer of megazorb on top. they only have hay in the massive littter tray which has a lid they love to lie in there. I clean them out every 5 days and clean the litter house out every day. my cage is 120cm long

Laurent is in a nero 3 sized cage and he's on old owels changed every other day He has some hay for munching but keeps him alot cleaner and easy to clean just shake and wasing machine

I'd been thinking about swapping their bedding for fleece in their house - they currently have hay but think that the fleece would be a lot cosier, especially for the wintertime as I don't have central heating.

I currently use newspaper on the bottom, megazorb and then hay for the cage. I find megazorb brilliant for soaking up their mess.

I clean my girls out every 2 - 3 days.
