Tansy was fine this morning but when I checked her in the afternoon she looked very bloated and lethargic. I rushed to the vet and they took an x-ray which showed she had cystic ovaries and one had ruptured. She had gone into hypovolemic shock ( sudden fluid loss) and it is touch and go whether she will survive. She has had injected metacam and baytril and sub cut fluids, I have to continue giving fluids through the night and we can but hope she makes it. If she recovers we have to consider a spey but at the moment we just need her to survive. I had no idea she had cysts, she has always been a podgy pig and showed no hormonal behaviour or hair loss but the x-ray clearly showed them. Luckily we had taken the pigs into the house at the weekend because our weather is cold and horrible ( they are normally in a brick shed with tube heaters, otherwise the cold may had taken her more quickly. I have syringed baby food and fibreplex into her and will give more metacam tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed for her.

So sorry to hear about Tansy halfpenny (sorry didn't mean to hit the "thank you" button), sending healing vibes I hope she is feeling more comfortable and has a good night.

Poor litle love, everything is crossed here.
Wishing Tansy a comfortable night and lots of healing and get well vibes sent your way xx

Oh my! That's awful, I must say if it wasn't for your quick acting something alot worse could have happened.

Sending lots of Vibes. Get better soon Tansy! x

I am sorry to hear that Tansy is so unwell, how is she this morning?

I wonder if there is a way of knowing why some pigs' ovarian cysts rupture and cause absolutely no issues (one of my own sows recently had an ovarian cyst, classic presentation, and easily palpable, it ruptured between my fingers) yet a few sows seem to have trouble.

Thank you for all the kind thoughts, but sadly Tansy died at about midnight last night.
I feel so guilty that I didn't realise she even had cysts.

That's really sad news, so sorry. Please don't feel guilty, they are often so good at hiding illness until the last minute. xx

Awww... I'm so sorry for your loss. Poor Tansy. ((HUGS))!

oh no, so sorry to hear about Tansy, rip baby girl.

Please dont feel guilty, its just a natural thing, but you did what you could for your baby, we arent vets, we cant always know what is going on until we are told. Give yourself a break.

Take care xxxxx
