We all know that it's very important to thoroughly wash any veggies before serving them to our piggies. There are many piggie owners who use tap water to clean veggies (including myself). I've heard that tap water contains calcium. Will this increase the risk of piggies becoming ill? Since they are eating the veggies that are rinsed with tap water? I use fountain water from the fridge to fill the water bottle, to avoid calcium.

I'm just curious,
Thank you ahead of time!

I have always used tap water for my pigs, including to rinse their veggies. 😳 i kind of feel like a bad owner now as i did not really know that tap water contains calcium. My piggies have never gotten ill., i will consider using the spring water that i use for my snails though.

My piggies get tap water, though I don’t rinse their veg...

Some areas have high calcium water, some dont. You can test your water i think. I know my area in th u.k is bad because any spilt water leaves stains on the black kitchen work top and crust ( limescale)around the tap. So i use a brita filter. With rinsing veg i just use tap water

My filter gets no limescale left inside it. And my drinking kettle that gets used only with filtered water, has no limescale left inside

I do filter my piggies water after Ruby suffered with bladder sludge, however I rinse their veggies with tap water.
Honestly if you worked out how much tap water is left on the rinsed veggies it would be so little that I really don't think it makes much of a difference.

I try to be careful about what I feed and conscoius about calcium, but I also try not to become obsessive.

I wash all veg with tap water and drink filtered water (Brita) and I do the same for my piggies too.

You have to watch for any mineral water purchased. It's bit always low in calcium

Most people reccomend that you should, including me. Because most veg can have pesticides and nasty stuff that we dont know about. So it is safe to rinse any fruit or veg that you give your piggies to get rid of any nasty stuff incase there is.
Is it essential to rinse veg?

I use tap water for drinking and any rising (but the veg has got to be proper grubby before I wash it!) but I do live in a soft water area

I tend to rinse my veg with boiled hot water - this is only because i prepare a few days worth of veg at a time and i don't like to give it to them cold out the fridge... i never rinse the herbs tho - they go all soggy... they now drink filtered water buts thats cos our new fridge has a water dispenser...

I do rinse some veg and have had no problem so far but will have to think about this as I live in a hard water area.

A bad pet owner, in my opinion, is someone who doesn’t fix their mistakes (with anything) 🙂

Boiling water is a good idea! I always found the herbs become a bit soggy, now that you mention it. I thought we have to wash those too. 🤔

i just go with the thought that you don't wash herbs if you eat them - or do you? they go like a soggy mush...

I rinsed Mint when I first tried giving it to the piggies, to get rid of some of the smell. I’m going to stop washing any herbs to see if they like it better.

I've never washed any herbs I give my piggies.

The only reason I did that is because after I cut up the veggies I put them in a strainer and I had thrown in the herbs... All I would have to do is rinse the veggies and pour it into her cage. I’m going to do it separately for now on 🙂

I use for my piggies only tap water.
Also, their veggies, fruits, herbs and gras are always washes with tap water. I don't trust myself to eat anything without first rinsing it, so I don't do it with my piggies either.

The water in Vienna is actually not that hard and it's really good quality (comes from the Alps and glaciers)
