hi I'm new to this forum so i hope this is in the right place sorry if it isnt rolleyes

now i have two guinea pigs they are indoors and there in the same room as the hamsters not cage just room lol and i have noticed if the hamsters are drinking it makes tapping noise and guinea pigs stop whatever there doing and purr its cute, I'm not fussed about them doing it i just wanted to know what they maybe thought the noise was :))
 
With my pigs when they don't know what the noise is they tend to purr and run in their sacks, which I'm guessing is because their scared of that noise!
 
Its usually when their unsure of a noise. But ours got used to the noisies which used to scare them!
 
It's not actually a purr they're making. It's a burr...

It's often difficult to distinguish between a rumble, a rumble strut, a burr and a purr. The sounds are very similar if you're not used to the difference but their behaviour will give away which one it is.

The main way to tell the differences between a purr and a burr are:

Purrs are usually quite low, sometimes soft and long. The piggy will flatten itself out; stretch out or even close its eyes. This is the sign of a happy pig.

Burrs are shorter, sharper sounds that are a little higher pitched than purrs. The piggy in question will usually stand quite still, possible upright at attention. This is an alarmed/startled sound and is usually in response to a noise or sound that is unfamiliar and alarming.

I imagine that, since your piggies are new to this room and don't know the hamsters, their drinking noise will be alarming to your piggies for now. It's nothing to really worry about. As I'm sure you know, piggies tend to be afraid/alarmed about everything new so once they get used to this noise, they'll be fine :)
 
its probally a burr lol

i adopted them beginning of may so they are still settling in an getting used to noises! they love the kids they sit there and listen to them nattering away its so cute ^)
 
My wife still has difficulties remebering what their noises all mean - that's my job at home :)

I keep telling her that there are at least 12 different calls but a lot of them sound very similar so you need to put them in context with what the stimuli are and what their bodies are doing.

I'm sure they're loving their new home but everytime they here something new/alarming, it will time them a bit of time to understand that it's not threatening. They do have fantastic memories though so, usually, once they learn a smell/sound etc. they don't forget what it means. The first thing they usually learn is that the door opening means they might get sth to eat :))
 
they deffinatly learned the sound of the plastic bags veggies come in they go nuts for and if anyone comes in with a plastic bag rattling they wheek thinking it feeding time :)
