hello everybody.

i got up for work this morning as usual and checked on the animals. i heard a cough from out the front but didn't think anything of it, because sometimes when the piggies drink from the water bottles they cough if they drink too quickly. after a couple of minutes i heard it again and i realised that it was Teddy. he kept coughing and everytime he coughed he put his paw to his face. i checked his mouth and compared it to Muffin's but that seems fine. he was eating and drinking when i left and otherwise seemed fine. but he sounded a bit raspy when i took him out to check him when he was talking to me. it almost sounded like he had a cold.

i had to go to work as Steve is giving me a lift to work, as i am carless at the moment but i keep worrying about Teddy. i won't get home tonight until 6pm

my mum said that if he is still coughing when i get home then i should take him to the vets. i am just worried as i know little animals can go down him very quickly.

does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks Cat :)

No - have him seen by the vets, especially if his breathing is raspy and crackly when you hold you ear close to his chest. You are right not to hang around with a suspected respiratory tract infection.

Here is a link to the guinealinx page for URIs: http://www.guinealynx.info/uri.html

thanks Vicky,

i have been worrying about him all day (and still am) i have booked an appointment for 7.30pm tonight the vet said that if i find out that i don't need it when i get home i can cancel it.

there is nothing i can do until i get home. i don't have a car this week and to get a taxi home to check on Teddy will cost me at least £50!

i hope he is still there when i get home :...

I have a guinea with bronchial issues who coughs. She's not always coughing but is prone to picking up a cough and occassionally it's raspy. I have to say that 2 coughs is just the start - for a while i thought hers was food related so i didn't get her to the vet until she seemed unwell and was off her food. At this point she was given baytril and metacam (as an anti-inflammatory). She got better within a week but has since developed a cough again. I treated as per vets instructions with metacam straight away and it didn't develop to anything more sinister this time.

If your guinea has a bronchial issue too then it sounds like you have caught it in time, earlier than I did. So try not to worry from work and just get teddy there for the 7.30pm appointment.

thanks Lisa,

i will let you know how i get on tomorrow. i only get on the internet before work and lunch break and i don't have internet at home. work clamped down on internet usage! i have now finished work for the day (i finish at 4.30pm) so i am just waiting for Steve to pick me up :)

teddy was alot better when i got home yesterday. i took him to the vets just incase. they checked his mouth and breathing and everything was normal. they said that if he starts breathing funny they want to see him back, but otherwise he is fine :)
