Hi everyone, I am new on this site but any help would be appreciated. I live in France so it is harder for me to get help.

Basically, my guinea pig has chronic bloat. I didn’t realise it was bloat at first because he has diarrhoea. It first started a few weeks after he had surgery for a testicular tumour last December. The first thing I noticed was that his anal sac was impacted. I bought a very large cage and placed his food and water at opposite ends so that he would have to move around a lot more. His poo became very soft and so the vet told me to give him Smecta. He didn’t seem to improve and I became worried about his breathing and so he was put on Baytril which firmed up his poo. When stopping this though the diarrhoea came back.

Within the first year of his life he developed bloat twice; the first being a mild episode but the second was very bad. As my vet didn’t know what else to do then he told me to go see a colleague of his some two hours drive away. He gave us some Gastro-gel (which is no longer available) which turned his condition around almost instantly.

With his current situation, I have been advised to change his diet. I was initially giving him Oxbow Essentials Adult pellets and Timothy hay and had stopped all veggies but was told to change this to Cunipic hay and Vetcare plus food. Unfortunately my guinea pig Teddy won’t eat this food so continued with the Oxbow pellets. Last Monday I took him for an X-ray to my local vet on the advice of the specialist vet It showed some gas and a lot of food in his caecum. The vet gave him an injection of Emeprid and said he would send the X-ray to his colleague for his advice. My vet phoned me the following day and said he had been advised that I should change his food again to Fibafirst and add in some Cobagreen which is a pro-biotic and pre-biotic with added vitamins. I am sceptical about changing his food as when looking on You Tube it looks exactly the same athe one he won’t eat. He doesn’t seem to eat much of the Oxbow pellets anyway so I just offer him 10g at a time (recommended amount is 20g) which usually takes him 24 hours to eat (my other guinea pig eats 10g in around half an hour).

I have been trying to find out why the Gastro-gel has been discontinued but as yet can’t see why so I will phone Virbac next week. I have found another product which contains the same ingredient but is for human consumption. It is called Silicea Gastro-Intestinal Gel and seems to do the same thing which is puts a protective lining on the intestines and draws out any bad bacteria.

I have asked my vet to order in some of the Cobagreen as I had a problem getting it online. I did buy some Avipro Plus which seems to be the same thing but my vet seems to think the ratio of the ingredients may be different.

I am giving Teddy Emeprid 0.3ml three times a day. It gets his gut moving but pushes out loads of diarrhoea. I have hold him when it starts coming out as otherwise he is covered in it and so is his cage. I feel so sorry for him.

I can only think that the operation itself has upset his system as he had been OK for the past four years without any problems with his gut at all. Throughout his current state he has continued to eat and not shown signs of illness. When he had bloat in his first year though he just stopped eating and pooping.

Hi Welcome to the forum.. Sorry to hear about Teddy's condition, We have Tagged @helen105281 for you as she may be able to give you some advice on this..

We will move this post for you to the Health & Illness thread as our more experienced members in H & I will see it..

Lisa & Ali..

Thank you Lisa and Ali, I forgot to mention that last year Teddy's life long companion died and so I introduced a new companion. This went well at first but within two months the new pig attacked Teddy very badly and so I had to separate them. I put their cages side by side at first but when Teddy had surgery for a testicular tumour and he developed impaction then diarrhoea I moved him up off the floor.

My vet suggested I get a female now that Teddy had been castrated and so I did. I have had her almost a week but they are getting on very well and lie side by side. I have also bought a playpen so that Teddy and Poppy can move around inside while my other male pig Toffy can run around outside.

I am currently giving Teddy Feroglobin (as recommended by Peter Gurney) 0.4ml once a day, a pinch of Avipro plus, 4 drops of liquid vitamin C and Fibreplex twice a day. His tummy doesn't seem to be distended and he is passing firmer poos although most of these are like cow pats. He does pass normal looking poos too.

Hello, welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear you are having such a bad time with this. Bloat is awful and something I have witnessed first hard with 2 of our piggies. It does sound as though Teddy is in quite a bad way

Have you had the results of the xray? Has anything been found to be causing the bloat maybe a mass pushing on organs?

Emeprid is a good start as you know its a gut stim and will be pushing through his system to keep everything going through. It may be worth speaking to your vet regarding Zantac (ranitidine) this is another gut stim but works on the other part of the gut, it is also a stomach protector. Lots of gentle massage will also help disperse the gas, a massage pad is useful also, I will try and find a link to one for you in a while - anything that can gently vibrate the tummy will help.
I would advise keeping off all veg while bloated and diarrhoea if you aren't already doing so, encouraging hay eating and importantly syringe feed with something like Critical Care or Recovery food or Mushed up pellets. Please weight him daily so you know how much food you are getting in and out..

You could really do with finding out if there is any underlying cause for the bloat.

Hopefully some more experienced Health and Illness members will have some suggestions you can talk to your vet about...

Lots of love to Teddy, I hope you can get some answers and he gets well soon.

His tummy doesn't seem to be distended and he is passing firmer poos although most of these are like cow pats. He does pass normal looking poos too.

Cow pat poo's often happen as the guts are starting to move again, is he off veg at moment?

Sorry, I forgot to say he is having Emperid 0.3ml three times a day. I stopped giving him veggies some weeks ago. He is eating lots of hay and his Oxbow pellets. I used to give him Excel pellets but changed these to the Oxbow when the problem started. He goes mad when I give Toffy his veggies and I do offer him a tiny morsel now and again. Many thanks.

This is one of the recomended massage pads that a few members on here use. It is often found on ebay Niagara Cyclo Massage Pad, we bought a cheaper version from boots. A few members have used Electric toothbrushes too @Stewybus did so with his little piggie Minky

Did the vet give you any indication of what the results of xray said?

The x-ray showed a little gas in his stomach and a lot of poo in his caecum but no obstruction or masses. He behaves like a normal healthy pig and only shows signs of discomfort when his tummy distends which hasn't happened for a number of days now. The specialist vet in Nantes seems to think he isn't getting enough fibre but he eats Oxbow pellets and Oxbow Timothy hay as well as Cupinic hay, the latter recommended by the vet himself.

I have sent off for some Silicea gastro-intestinal gel as this has the same properties as the Virbac Gastro-gel that Teddy was prescribed when he had an episode of bloat in his first year. I am also going to try Vega Digestive Enzymes in case he is having a problem digesting fibre. It just seems strange that he is otherwise well.

Hi welcome to the forum. Sport Billy has covered most things already so will just add a couple. Do you have access to Woodwards Gripe water and Dioralyte in France? When my Maddie had an xray that confirmed she was full of gas we were advised to give both of these and they did really help. The gripe water we gave as 3ml every few hours and the Dioralyte was as much as we could get her to take throughout the day. I also agree with the recommendations for massage and have the Niagara massage pad so gave Maddie massage therapy every few hours too. An electric toothbrush would do for now though. We also kept her topped up with syringe feed and weighed her daily to ensure that she was not losing any weight. Also are you giving him pain relief? I have heard good things about the Vega digestive enzymes.

It seems that you're already doing a lot of things correctly. sport_billy & helen105281 have added to this & most things have been covered. When Minky had a similar problem in December I gave her Boots Gripe Water 1ml before meals. I also used an electric toothbrush, the old type that vibrate. I massaged her tummy with the shaft & top of head while she was laid on her back between my legs. This helped greatly because after one 30 to 40 minute session she did over 50 poos in 10 minutes. Before I got the idea to use the toothbrush I took her for a 40 mile ride in the car, a rough road would be better than a motorway. I now have a massage pad (Niagara CycloTherapy Massage Pad) which I bought on ebay for just over £50. Here is one to show you what it looks like:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NIAGARA-S...1?pt=UK_Health_Massage_RL&hash=item3a8c8c7e57

Also please check out this thread for pictures of Minky and the electric toothbrush:- https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/total-trust.109261/#post-1486134

Minky did recover from the bloat so please don't give up. Good Luck

He's not having any pain relief but he doesn't seem to be in pain. His tummy is soft and not distended at all and he is eating hay constantly. When he had bloat in his first year he stopped eating completely and I had to force feed him with critical care and a host of other medicines for several days until he started eating by himself and was pooping again. Although he intermittently gets a distended tummy he isn't demonstrating any of the symptoms he did with his first episode.

Thank you for your kind replies. All pigs having floor time at the moment. Three little piggies, two dogs and a cat. Miniature dachshund thinks they are her babies and tries to eat poops and watches over them. Other dog just copies what she does! Going to vet tomorrow to pick up some Cobagreen which was recommended by Nantes vet. If Teddy's tummy distends I will try toothbrush. Again many thanks.

Just an update. I picked up the Cobagreen that the vet wanted me to use. I have to give him two scoops per day. Instead of sprinkling it on his food I mixed it with a little water and gave it Teddy via syringe. He absolutely loves it and grabs hold of the syringe to get more. Even Poppy came to look and grabbed hold of the syringe too. His poos have been sticky but they seem a bit more formed this evening. He has continued to eat hay as usual and is eating more pellets; I put this down to having his new cage mate, and he drinks water from his bottle. It's a mystery that the vet doesn't seem to be able to solve yet as usually with this condition guinea pigs stop eating and drinking. I know this is what he did when he had bloat in his first year. Back then though he didn't have any diarrhoea. It's confusing as bloat and diarrhoea are supposed to be treated differently. His tummy is soft and not distended tonight and at the moment he is trying to harvest some caecal pellets from Poppy. I don't think she is too impressed though.image.webpimage.webp
