Pig had dental 3 weeks ago and wouldnt eat anything afterwards. Ive got her through on pellets and mashed up pellets. She had another dental with another vet today and is on metacam. shes eaten some little bits of hay tonight, but not as much as i'd like considering shes on pain meds. Maybe it just feels weird and she'll be bettertomorrow, but i dont know. I think i need to make the decision if its fair for her to keep going like this. :-(

Also the vet noticed a vulval discharge which she took samples of and has sent away, but ive never seen any discharge... I hope its not urine she saw as her pee had always been creamy / white...

Poor Pig :(

It can often take time after a dental to eat again. Maybe worth getting in touch with Debbie (Furryfriends) on here, she is she can offer any advice http://www.teasnorthampton.co.uk/ She is very knowledgable on dental issues.

Lots of love to Pig x

I sent all the info etc to Simon, but he says it's really difficult to give an opinion without seeing the piggie.

My offer still stands to have her here for a while to enable Simon to have a look.

It can take a while for a piggie to start eating following a dental, with some starting immediately and others taking months. However, in the early stages we have found weekly follow up filings of the teeth are what makes the difference.

Little Jerry had his teeth burred under GA a couple of weeks ago, and although he isn't eating independantly yet, he is now able to eat if the food is poked into his mouth. This is already a big improvement for Jerry, but he has had one conscious dental follow up this week and is booked in for another next week. His quality of life is excellent and in all other ways he behaves like any normal piggie.

Thanks. I think i might phone simon next week.
Shes eating small amounts of sweetcorn and some bits of dried dandelion and green oat hay stuff.

Could cystic ovaries cause a white vulval discharge? What are the symptoms of cystic ovaries? Ive been given some septrin for it.

Also got told that pig had pododermatitis and to keep her on softer bedding. Buut shes always had red feet, and had some mashed up pellets stuck to her feet which did look like the black center of pododermatitis..

Dental piggies who eat softened pellets and syringe food always seem to have dirty feet. Simon always laughed at Poppet's feet as she really had dirty ones, bless her.

If you ring Simon, mention that I emailed him all the details about your piggie, so he can recall who you are. He speaks to so many people with dental piggies. I will mention to him tomorrow that you may call next week.
Have you seen this discharge yourself or do you think it was just milky looking urine that the vet saw? It would be worth mentioning that to Simon too if you call.

If there is any way you could get Pig here I really think it would be worth getting Simon to take a look.

I would definitely recommend you get her to Simon if you can :) With regards to a discharge, as the vulval opening is in the same place as the anus, then I would be more concerned that the "discharge" is really to do with her not having enough to eat & her stomach/intestines not working properly. My piggy Poppy had such a discharge when she had diarrhea last year, which turned into gut stasis :( She excreted the gloopy white stuff in between normal poops & upset poops. Can you syringe feed her if necessary?

I have no idea what this discharge the vet saw was, she spoke to my mum as she took her into the vets as i was working. They rang saying they wanted to send it off for analysis. Mmum said yes as she was put on the spot and didnt ask any questions about it. Ive never seen any discharge before, and shes been checked over daily along with her daily weigh ins. Her pee has always been milky looking, with some sediment in sometimes, but its never caused a problem.

I was wondering if its got anything to do with ovarian cysts. Every time i pet her she rumbles and walks sideways. She used to do it every now and again but niw its everydays. She has no hair loss. Can you get discharge with ovarian cysts?

Shes been trying to eat some corn but cant get a good grip on it. The tops of her incisors are flat not sharp and pointy so she cant slice through the foods. She said no to grass dandrlions and dried hay today. Shes so lively, bouncing around the place begging for food. Its heartbreaking seeing her so hungry, but unable to eat anything i provide her. Shes had some nuggets tonight which she wolfed down. I really dont know if shes being fussy and just wanting nuggets or if she actually cant eat anything.

I told the parents about the cat and rabbit clinic, and was told 'shes your guinea pig you can do what you like'.

My bf saw her today and said she looked really skinny, he said i should put her to sleep as shes suffering- which shocked the rents. But i couldnt put her to sleep without knowing that ive done everything i possibly can for her. So I'm going to ring simon next week and have a chat. See what happens from there and hopefully will get some answers about the results of the vulval discharge....

So that is my plan for the time being...

Oh i forgot to ask, bought some vit c tablets from superdrug, non sweetened non flavoured ones. 200mg.
What is the dose for vit c?

My piggie bubbles had bad dental problems about a month ago. He saw so many people : local vet(who performed an emergency fix as he had a massive ulcer and long molars), then he saw vedra , a vet in reading trained by vedra and then finally chris and titch near Hastings ( an hour drive but after just two visits he was sorted and can now eat again normally) . So please take your piggie to one of these vets/rodentoligists because they are all very good and it will probably be worth the journey.x

update.

Schoffers sadly passed away this evening.

She had stopped eating hay, veg and hard nuggets after the last two dental, just eating mashed up nuggets. At that time the dentals were not giving her any better quality of life. So I decided that it would be unfair to put her through anymore dentals.
We decided that when she stopped eating mash nuggets then we would put her to sleep.
Last night she stopped eating and was very quiet, just sitting by the radiator. Again this morning she wasnt interested in food.
So I drove back home today with the mind set that I would be taking her to the vets tomorrow. But by the time arrived home, she had passed away in mums arms.

Thankyou to everyone that has given advice and support over the past few years, it has been much appreciated.

Thanks

Elinor.

So sorry you have lost your piggie. You did every possible you could for her.

RIP Schoffers
