Mo is a 2 1/2 year old female cuy. She came into our rescue in December 2012 with a large abscess in the right jaw area. It took 4 months of antibiotics and chlorhexidine flushes to finally get rid of the abscess. Mo maintained her weight fairly well during this time.

Soon after this it was discovered that her incisors were misaligned and Mo started dropping weight. She was checked by our vet who trimmed her incisors but not the molars because they didn't look too bad. We started physical therapy by trying to push her mandible (lower jaw) over in hopes of realigning her teeth.

Within a couple weeks, she was back at the vet because she continued to lose weight and wasn't eating vegetables. She was observed eating some pellets. Her total weight loss to this point is over 200 grams - she started around 1600 grams.

Yesterday Mo had her molars trimmed and an xray was taken. It revealed that the right mandible was thickened and rotated medially. The right mandibular molars were almost growing horizontally. There is a severe slant to the right molars and a slight slant to the left ones. This is likely a result of the abscess.

OUr vet suggested that a chin sling might be of help. Has anyone had experience with this type problem before? Has anything (including the chin sling) helped?
Thank you,
Wenton5

I've seen the chin slings online and read some literature about them, but have never actually used one. I looked into it for one of my pigs with severe tooth and jaw issues, but unfortunately she passed away before I could obtain one. She had a severe abscess that spread to the jawbone and caused osteomyelitis and eventual septicemia. With a vet that was not that experienced with pigs, a small body size/weight to start with, and the fact that she really never resumed eating on her own at all after the abscess developed, the poor girl was just not strong enough to beat the infection. I hope for better luck for Mo... if she does get a sling, I would love to hear updates on her progress. I'm curious as to a real-life experience. Best wishes to Mo and I hope you get some useful information!

I'm so sorry about your piggy. :( I will let you know if we try it. One person said they don't support the sling as it makes the jaw weaker. Another person swears by it, we will see, I will keep you posted. Thank you again.
