The past two years pigs had over grown teeth. But during that time, they have been getting worse.
We used to manage one dental every 6 months or so. This then became every few months. But recently I've been having to take her monthly.
She never used to lose weight, but now shes losing weight and not putting it back on after the dentals.
*sigh* sad piggy owner. :-(

Often, when this happens, it is due to a spur that is being missed. Simon has seen quite a few piggies who have come to him with a similar problem, and it has been something as simple as that, which once sorted has amazing results.

She has a deformed root of one of her cheek teeth (ive posted the xray of it in a previous thread), which is causing permanent mis-alignment of the cheek teeth. So it is spur formation and they all get trimmed back to the right length. Its just they keep reforming but now at an alarming rate!
I fear the deformity is getting worse and pushing the teeth more, so the spurs are forming more rapidly.
Aaand its now making her front teeth bad.

:-(

There are a few theories floating around,
1) ondontoma (which i dont think it is)
2) abcess (again i dont think so)
3) due to a fracture of the jaw line and the root is growing down the fracture line.

Have you considered a CT?

£145 approx at Highcroft, an exotics referral initial consult is £75, and follow ups about £50

Has that link worked?

I was talking to colin blakey about it, and he suggested a ct.
Buuut after a lot of thinking, would having a ct and a diagnosis actually change anything i would do with her treatment? Which i know is the wrong attitude for me! I'm torn between my intrigue of finding out what it is and between causing her the stress of driving to bristol and another g.a.

The tooth cant be removed if its a tumour. If the diagnosis was a jaw fracture, nothing can be done about it. If it was an abcess id have seen additional symptoms.
What ever the diagnosis would be, id still just end up playing it by ear and have dentals when needed, and decide when enoughs enough and its no longer fair to keep putting her through all this.

Its so frustrating! I just dont know what to do.

Would it be ok with you if I show those xray pics to Simon and get his thoughts on this? He's currently on annual leave but will be back in next week.

Yeh go for it. Any more input would be good. I also have two other views (Vd and a second oblique). Shall i email those to you too?
I'm not sure exactly who owns the xrays, but i did get permission to take pictures of them....
Ive not found any papers on g.pigs with anything like this either. In fact theres not alot of papers on g.pig at all! Lots about rabbits !
