Hi there,

My guinea pig Blanche has a big teeth Chattering habit which I thought was anxiety but she even does it as I'm about to feed her (her favourite time!) and at times when I know she's in a happy mood. Might there be another explanation for this? Or is she just incredibly changable?! She is a complicated little thing...

usually if it's towards food, it means 'hurry up, you're not going fast enough!' and she's being a bit bossy! other times it's angry, upset, agitated at something or someone.

if she does it alot of the time then it could well be that something is making her anxious, possibly illness related. so you could always have your guinea savvy/exotics vet check her over for peace of mind, especially if the sound becomes more teeth grating rather than a chatter, which would indicate discomfort/pain.

is she a lone piggy? generally they are more anxious by themselves. she may benefit from a friend :)

I agree with biscandmatt, perhaps she needs a friend? Agitation can cause teeth chattering or maybe she is just being bossy!

Sometimes Snowball does it when I'm hand feeding her. If she's on my lap she can be all relaxed and she'll clack her teeth, not in the same way as the teeth-chatter-threat. It's slower. I have sometimes wondered what it meant too :)

Spike chatters at me sometimes, I think it's because he's impatient to see what food he's getting, warning me he doesn't want any of this smooch cuddly stuff just bring on the food! Maybe this is what she is doing?
