[aimzer, post: 1964159, member: 11623"]Does anyone know, can the zantac be given alongside baytril or should they be given 1 hour apart like with a probiotic? Also should I still be giving probiotic if she's getting zantac?

I'm syringe feeding her and she is being very cooperative. I've given 8ml over around 20-30mins. Do I just keep giving until she refuses to take anymore?[/QUOTE]

You can give zantac alongside.

With each feed you give as much as she will take in one sitting. The smaller the amount you can get in one go, the more often you have to feed around the clock; you want to get 40-60 ml into her over 24 hours to keep her ticking over. At 8 ml, I would do at least one feed in the middle of the night. Have one session before you go to bed and one as soon as you get up if she is not eating anything else. A healthy, well adult guinea pig is eating about the equibvalent of 100-120 ml in fluids and solids throughout a day.

Thank you! After that last feed she has eaten two handfuls of hay over the course of around 1-2hours :)
I am going to give her another feed before bed and also through the night too as she has lost a fair bit of weight so want to help her gain some back!

Everything crossed here for you both here! :luv: x

I attempted 2 feeds overnight but she would only accept 1 (managed 5ml). Tried again this morning but she is being so uncooperative. I managed to get her meds in but no food :( shes attempting to eat the leaf from a strawberry and we have had some poos overnight. Only night 2 of syringe feeding and I'm exhausted!

HUGS!

Please check her weight daily at the same time and keep an eye on the poo size (which is usually lagging 1-2 days behind, depending on how sluggish they are).

If you are at home, try little but often every 2-3 hours throughout the day. it can be very difficult if she is not interested. Have you considered mushing up her pellets and seeing whether she likes those better, especially when they are still a little bit warm (but no warmer than hand warm)?

I have been giving her mushed up pellets as waiting for critical care to arrive in the post. The packet I had in the 1st aid box was well out of date! The vet nurse was going to give me some yesterday but we both forgot! I got some very small thin poos around 3am but the ones this morning are along chunkier and almost like normal. I have been weighing her every morning. She is 743g this morning. I have read all the advice threads over and over to see if I'm doing something wrong. She will be due some probiotic in the next hour so will try more food then

Is she back in with Daisy? I wonder if being together would be beneficial to her. I hope she starts to eat plenty by herself very soon.

No she isn't. Do you think so? I was wondering that too. But it would be much more difficult for me to monitor her. I will out her back in after the next feeding attempt. Thank you

@Wiebke sorry to bother you but have you used the vetark pro-c probiotic before? I have just opened it up and the powder is a sort of off white colour. More like a light grey. Does this sound right? The last probiotic I used (avipro) was pure white. It is in date until 05/18.

Yes, that probiotic is fine. I agree the colour is a bit off-putting but it does the job :-)

If your piggy is reluctant to take syringe food then just feed little and often. I find giving a couple of mls and then leaving them 10 minutes or so and giving another ml or two works well when they aren't happy taking more It also mimics more normal eating as they graze constantly rather than eat a bit meal every few hours.

Great, thank you. Managed 5ml feed and 2ml water with probiotic that time with the help of my mum. 1 to hold and 1 to feed! I have put her back in with Daisy and she has been exploring her cage and had a little munch on some hay.
She cleans herself for ages after a feed as her chin is wet. I do try and clean it for her but I'm obviously not doing a good enough job:lol:

Cleaning herself is always a good sign, as that means that a piggy still very much has the will to live and to get on with life.

Hopefully she will be able to manage a bit more the better she feels in herself! A lof the syringe feeding is down to practice. The more confident you get, the more it translates to your piggy.

So we managed around 5ml at out latest feed with 2ml water with probiotic. She was getting restless so I out her back in her cage. I rustled bags and made the noise I normally do when I give them their evening veggies and her ears pricked straight up and she started begging up at the edge of the cage! I couldn't believe it.
She has managed a good amount of grated carrot, small grated apple and a few small strips of lettuce leaves. Took her ages but I'm so happy :D:D

Quick question, when I'm mashing down the nuggets with warm water and pulling them up into a syringe. The syringe is mainly picking up the water as the mush is too thick. The mix sort of separates. No matter how thin I make the mix the syringe seems be leave the majority of mush behind. Any ideas? Really wish my critical care arrived today

Have you got a blender? If so could you try blending the pellets to powder and then mixing with warm water? Makes it easier to get it into the syringe.

Yes I do, that's a good idea. Will give it a go at next feed. Thank you!

You're welcome. I can't claim the credit for the suggestion. I ran out out of Emeraid and my back up pack of CC was out of date and I was given the recommendation to blend the pellets - you can also add in the probiotic if you want at the same time as the water. It was easier to syringe that way than just as pellets soaked in warm water.

My critical care was out of date too. So typical that happens when I actually needed it! :(

Yes, I couldn't believe I had exactly the same issue. I ran out on a Sunday so no vets open either. I am normally so organised, I felt I'd failed Poppy. But these things happen.

Maple is very prone to sitting in the corner staring at the wall. I know she's in pain. The vet gave me metacam and said 0.3ml once n day. I was planning on giving half in morning and half the dose at night.

I'm worried about her sitting in the corner but she does move if I go to close. And she was literally just up begging a few hours ago :/

Edit post

I think I am going to up Maples metacam slightly. She is on the cat metacam
Maple is approx 700g and is only on 0.3ml per day! :(
I would phone the vet to discuss but not open til Monday!

Pellets mush up with no problem, if you put boiling water over them and then mash them up with a fork. Leave to cool and then feed when still warm. The piggies love them. I rarely use recovery food for syringe feeding as the piggies seem to prefer the mushed up nuggets.

We always give Metacam twice daily as it is out of their system very quickly, due to their fast metabolism. We would normally give 0.25 ml twice daily.

They did mush up fine but then not long after I found the water separates from the mush if that makes sense. I'm using Jr farm grainless, not sure if that makes a different. The syringe seems to be sucking up the water with not much mush! I have blended them and will add water to see if I can get more of a paste.

Are your piggies usually on a higher metacam dose post surgery?

It shouldn't separate. I've never had that problem. Are you using a 1 ml syringe with the end cut off?

We sometimes go to 0.3 mls of Metacam, twice daily, post surgery.

Yep 1ml syringe with the tip cut off. I put a few pellets in a bowl, add a bit of booked water, wait for it to cool, then feed.
