I'd gone away on holiday and left my 2 male piggies with a pet sitter. On the morning I was going to pick them both up, the sitter says that she has just noticed that he has wet patch under his chin and recommended I take him to vets to get checked asap, for a possible burst abscess. And that he was eating and drinking fine, greedy as always, in the week that she was looking after him.

I took him to vets that same afternoon and the vet said his teeth were really bad, lacerating his cheeks and that his front top teeth were wearing down oddly and were curving to the side ever so slightly. Wetness under his chin being dribbling. I hadn't noticed any of this before I went away and both this male and the other one I have, had a check at a different vets not too long ago as I was worried about the other pigs eating. I was also concerned about impaction at the time too as noticed his bum rather dirty when picked him up, which vet said it wasnt, possibly the opposite from swallowing alot more saliva.

The vet then filed down his teeth and has sent him home with some pain relief, with another appointment in just over a weeks time for some more filing, as was bleeding a lot while filing.
Ive given him 2 doces of pain relief since returning from the vets but he is still struggling to eat.

I have softened pellets and he refuses to even sniff them. Ive cut watery veg and nutritious veg very very small so he doesnt have to chew so much. Ive not seen him eat much, and Ive just had him out for cuddles and to eat some grated carrots, cucumber and grass for over 2 hours and he hasnt peed or pooped.

I'm getting very worried about him as all he wants to do is sleep. Is this just side affects of the pain relief and sort of like a mental block from teeth. Is he still in pain? (can find the doces in a moment) Ive ordered critical care but it wont arrive for another day.

What else can I do to help him?

Hi!

Please step in with round the clock syringe feeding support and crisis care asap:
Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

If you can get there at all, please book an appointment at the Cat&Rabbit care clinic in Northampton to a see vet specialising in dental treatment for guinea pigs. They see piggies from all over the country, as far as Edinburgh and Cornwall.

Guinea pig dentals are sadly not part of vet training, so they often come with complications/piggies not able to eat after treatment. The time spent under GA in combination with a very painful, sore mouth is often having an adverse effect. :(

Please ask your vet how soon your piggy is allowed more painkiller (ideally dog metacam and not much weaker cat metacam). He will need the highest level for comfort once the operation cocktail has worn off (up to 0.4 ml of dog metacam twice daily for a 1 kilo piggy or 1.2 ml of cat metacam twice daily).

Yes, we take our two boys from Cornwall. Simon Maddocks is a fantastic piggie dental vet and worth the long journey. Hope you can get your piggie seen by him very soon x Good luck! here’s the link below

My piggy was seen at the Cat & Rabbit Care clinic on the recommendation of my pet sitter. The vet said he could have 0.3ml of Loxicom twice a day.

If you are at all worried about him please get back in touch with Simon. Let them know your concerns about your little one, they will advise you if more medication is needed. Sometimes their mouths are very sore and it takes a little time to get eating properly again. Do persevere with the syringe feeding, I know it’s difficult when they don’t want to take it but remember you are keeping them going until they can eat for themselves. If your piggie has to go back for further work on his teeth then there is some rebalancing to be done. Once this has been done things should improve considerably for little piggie, hang in there and don‘t loose heart x

Thanks for your support. Back from the vets now. Vet has filed down some more teeth, as from the amount of blood from 1st filing he couldn't see properly, there was another section of tooth scraping against his cheek causing him pain when trying to eat.

He was also given some critical care at the vets and was eating it alot better. Have to keep up with the syringe feeding and pain relief and still have the next appointment in a weeks time but hopefully he is on road to recovery now 😊

Simon is amazing! I really hope your piggy will be doing much better soon. You can mush up his normal guinea pig nuggets and syringe feed those. It sounds like his teeth were pretty bad. So glad you were told to go to Simon xx

I am too! Yep have mashed up pellets for the time being until my critical care arrives.

Simon said they were pretty bad, and that he must've been in pain for a while for him to have been dribbling so much 🥺.

I had both piggies checked not long ago for their teeth as the other was acting up, and all was alright then. Feel like such a bad piggy mum now.

If you had another vet check them, they may have missed something! You wouldn't have known there was an issue until he started to have problems.

So glad he is doing better now x My Ted went for a dental on Monday and he has been a little off his food until today, he had a sore mouth but it’s only temporary and he’s eating away now. Good luck, I’m sure you will see him improving daily now x

How did your appointment go? x

Yes it went well thank you! Simon said his teeth are looking more like bricks now. Since the Friday before last piggy has been jumping around his cage squeaking way more than usual, he's tucking into more solid foods now. Simon had put him back to fortnightly visits now as his teeth were looking alright and then will see at the next appointment if we stick to 2 weeks or put to 3 etc. Although piggy was still losing a little weight but definitely seen a huge difference in his behaviour.
I'm sooo relieved, hates syringes though hah. And the piggy who needs critical care hates it but the one who doesnt loves it, is that a normal thing haha

Aw, that’s always the case, the one that needs it, hates it, the one that doesn’t loves it! I used to let my Bill finish off Ted CC on a spoon, he absolutely loved it 😆
So glad to hear your piggie is making good progress, Simon is so good isn’t he!

I never use Critical Care as it becomes a battle to get it in! I always mush up theirs normal nuggets and syringe feed that xx
Yes I would do now 😀 At the time I didn’t know you could use pellets and spent an absolute fortune on Critical Care over that post op six weeks back in 2018, thank goodness I found this site and many thanks for all your help at the time Debbie X

This is one sign that we check in case our piggies aren't feeling well. They love CC when they are good and well. But once they refused it and start hating CC, they seem to be feeling not well. Of course this is just based on my past and present piggies, so don't take it as a normal thing to the majority. :D

Yes Simon is amazing! I never would've thought my piggy would be acting like he just has, practically escaping for a little treat, and liking his pain medicine, I'm amazed he's like a new piggy 😍
