Hello, our guinea pig developed tooth problems (overgrowth to upper and bottom teeth). As a result, he was not able to eat. He has been taken to the vet who reduced the length of his teeth. However, he still refuses to eat, seemingly because he cannot grind or chew his good. On the vets advice, we feed him regularly with a syringe directly into his mouth, but we cannot keep this up for a long period.
We would really appreciate any advice.
Many thanks
John

Hello and welcome
So sorry your piggie is experiencing dental problems. Are you in the UK? Can you tell us roughly where you live, there is an excellent vet who is very experienced and deals with lots piggies dental issues from all over the UK, us included, we go to see him from Cornwall. He is based in Northampton, at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic, well worth the trip x
Keep up with the feeding don’t loose heart x

Hi and welcome to the forum John. Sorry to hear your piggy is having teeth problems. The teeth can quickly grow too long again if the piggy is not eating well enough to wear them down.

If you can get there Simon in Northampton is the best shout as he does all dentals conscious so there is no fear of general anaesthetic weakening your piggy. I would make sure you are seeing someone highly experienced with piggies as well as taking the teeth too low or not low enough is just going to carry on giving him problems. Have you been prescribed pain relief for him? His mouth will be incredibly sore and that can stop him from wanting to eat for himself too

Hi and welcome

Can you please add your country, state/province or UK county to your account details (via clicking on your username on the top bar). We have members and enquiries from all over the world. Our default is UK based and may lead to confusion whereas we can tailor any recommendations to what is relevant and available where you are straight away.
Cavy dental savvy vets are unfortunately rare, so your location really counts.

Please continue with syringe feeding and grating veg. Our syringe feeding guide also contains a chapter on caring for dental piggies.
