Teeth Problems?

Have posted this before but seems no1 really respons to my messages :(

But my Tucker on a recent trips to the vets was found to have awful teeth probs. He has no bottom teeth as the top one have curl so go straight into the gum.
They have clipped them very very short and I'm to take him back every 3 weeks to have them clipped to try an encourage the bottom ones to grow back.
But if they don't they want to remove the top ones I'm very worried about this and wondered if anybody esle has any gummy piggies and how do they manage to eat? ?
 
Aw poor piggy :( I'm sorry ive no experience with this sort of thing at all but i hope the clipping works and the bottom ones grow back x
 
i think if they have no teeth then a lot supplement food with critical care, I'm not certain but i think some piggies that have dental problems are able to pick up some food which is cut up really small such as grated carrot etc.. you can always put the little chunks in his mouth one at a time and push them back a little to his back teeth, as I'm assuming if he cant eat anything hard his back teeth will be suffering as they wont be wearing down..

Thanks ladies, I asked the vet and she said I would have to cut his hay and grass up very tiny but would that mean I would need to feed his seperate to his wife then? Cause what if I'm at work and she eats all the chopped up stuff so he has nothing as she is a pig lol. Really praying his teeth sort themselves out bless him been dead worried x
 
I'd just chop everything up, she'll save him some lol! but might be best to have him on your knee and feed him an extra bit once a night or something just to make sure he's getting something! x
 
yeah possibly.. maybe you could just take him out for an hour at night and make sure he's eating the chopped up stuff.. you can always cut a lot of up so there is enough for both of them and put long stuff in too it might temot the lady pig to eat the longer stuff :)

when piggies have teeth problems you need to make sure you have time devoted to them to make sure they are eating enough, and it takes time and patience ive had 2 with dental problems.. if he doesnt eat very much you will need to feed critical care to keep food going through his system it contains the fibre he needs too.

just a tip should you end up having to feed him critical you might want to mix a nice tastin veggie in with it I found that Ella's Kitchen do a really good range of baby food and all it is, is puree fruit and veg there are 3 which guinea pigs can that ive found so far have just dont get ones with potates in :) they sell that in tesco in little pouches, mine didnt like the taste of critical care.

hopefully your little piggy will be fine its just always good to get stuff in just incase :)
 
Yep I spend lot of time with them every day so wouldn't be an issue feeding him tho tbh he is eating more then he ever has. I think since having his teeth cut right back he has managed so much easier with eating. Think I will get some critical care in anyway as looks like Pippin (my other piggie) is preg so the babies may need it and want to be prepared. Thanks again. I think If after the 3rd 4th time of getting them cut back if there is no improvement will let her remove them what do you think?
 
You can always blend some food down in the processor. I have done this with Lilac Rose and popped into a small dish and she just laps it all up - literally.

With her recovery food she laps it up off the spoon.

If this is going to be an ongoing problem, I'd suggest bulk buying the tub, CriticalCare is also useful to have in an emergency if one of your piggies stops eating suddenly. CC is a complete diet made for herbivores so if he's getting that (feed about 20ml/day if he begins to lose weight - split into four 5ml feeds about 3-4 hours apart) you shouldn't have to worry about him not getting any food while in the cage.

If he isn't losing weight I'd recommend force feeding 5ml morning and night (10ml each day) to keep his weight and vitamin levels stable. If he has no back molars this will greatly help him to maintain weight. You force feed using syringes (sometimes the vet will give you these for free, aim for the 5ml syringes, I found them to be helpful) and slowly inject the solution (CC & Water) into the BACK of the piggies mouth pausing to let him chew and swallow.

As well as cutting up hay, you can also tempt him with grasses to keep his enthusiasm with eating and cut his daily veggies into smaller pieces so he can pick them up easier. Be creative!

Okey yes my vet said to make sure hay and grass was cut up small for him if they need to remove them. I have just had a peek and blimey she has really cut his teeth back there about 5ml! :o
No sign of any bottom ones coming through tho :(
