My piggy was barely eating or drinking and I suspected she had a problem with her teeth which was confirmed by my vet on Monday. Her premolars and molar teeth are not flat but look more like shark's teeth; they resemble that shape, are sharp-looking and obviously longer than normal molars which are flat. My vet reckons they are probably making her jaw ache a bit too, because the length means she has to keep her mouth open a little bit all the time.
The vet has filed her teeth down and given her some meds and some liquid food but she did say the long term outlook is not too good because she could have to have her teeth filed down every 6-8 weeks and the anaesthetic could kill her.
I'd like to hope I could help her by trying to get to wear her teeth down properly and keep them short so that she doesn't need to see the vet so often.
Her dental problems are mostly my fault; I've given her too much choice in what she eats and she has ended up choosing other food stuff over her hay which would've helped her the most in keeping her teeth healthy. From now on she gets one tablespoon of dry guinea pig pellets and once that is gone, she has to eat her hay if she gets hungry! I'm going to try to be strict with her.
But I came here because I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem? And also to see if anyone had any advice on what else I can do to help her keep her teeth short? She's not a big fan of chew toys etc.
