Hello,

I've recently noticed my piggies teeth. Agnes seems to have her bottom 2 teeth missing and her top teeth are longer than Gertrude's. Gertrude's teeth look a lot a whiter where as Agnes' seem to have a tinge of yellow to them.

I am currently trying to find a vet who specialises in guinea pigs. They have plenty of nuggets and hay daily along with fresh water everyday and a variety of veg/fruit every so often.

Can anyone offer me any advice with what I can do in the mean time until I can get in touch with a vet?!

Thanks!

Hi piggyfan,

Yes, I used that locator and have recently just been to the vets, Village Vets in Woolton, near Liverpool. Basically, they can't do anything for my pig because her two top teeth are now loose. They gave me an option of: Get some x-rays done which would cost me £211 to see if it shows anything or think about euthanasia. The way he handled her was disgusting, referred to her as "it". And just made me feel like I was a burden to him. Our appointment was a late one and I felt he couldn't wait to get me out.

I have been in tears ever since leaving the vet and have no idea what to do. I started to syringe feed her some critical care a couple of week ago, to make sure she is getting food. She does eat her nuggets but you can tell she struggles, it takes her a while. She eats her hay and also eats her veg. She is just very lethargic and not her upbeat self.

I am worried about her teeth and the Vet has made me feel that nothing else can be done. I am currently looking into getting a second opinion.

Sorry for ranting, but felt I needed to.

I would suggest that you take your piggy to The Cat & Rabbit Clinic near Northampton. Simon Maddock is one of the best guinea pig dental vets in the country & is well worth the journey. I've taken my piggy, Minky from where I live near Middlesbrough on the nearly 400 mile round trip & it was well worth it. I've also helped to get other piggies from York & Northumberland down there & they've both come back after been successfully treated. It's possible that Simon may be able to do the x-rays without anesthetic which would greatly reduce the cost & the dangers. @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary may me able to advice better as she does lots of caring for sick piggies whilst been treated by Simon or his wife Kim who is equally good with piggies. If you can't get down yourself a Piggy Train may be organised to get your piggy there. Definitely don't think of euthanasia till your piggy has been there.

If the teeth are becoming loose and are discoloured it would suggest there may be an infection or maybe there has been some trauma to the front of the mouth. There really is no reason for euthanasia, and I have piggies here who have missing incisors and they manage perfectly well. You really do need your piggy to be seen by a knowledgeable vet and Simon and Kim Maddock, here in Northampton, are probably the best in the country with regard to dental issues. I offer temporary places here at the sanctuary to enable piggies to get treatment from Simon and Kim, and then return home when they are better.

Is there any way you could get to Northampton (a long way I know) to see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit clinic? I am tagging @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary who runs a sanctuary for dental pigs in conjunction with Simon. It may even be possible to arrange transport via piggy train on here.

Edit, posted at the same time.

I don't know how far you are able to travel, but Molly Varga at Cheshire Pets is very good, and an exotics vet too, they are at Holmes Chapel in Cheshire and are on the recommended vets at top of page.
Sounds like your little guinea is a very urgent case and needs some help fast. Good luck keep us posted.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for the replies, I really appreciate all the feedback.

I knew euthanasia was a stupid option because she is still upbeat, the fact is - she does eat. She just struggles. I have even recently started softening her nuggets and she wolfs them down - which is great to see. As at least I know she isn't starving to death.

I do want to still get her to a vet, however, I live in St. Helens - Northampton is fair distance from me, but I won't rule this out. I will also have a look at the vets mentioned in Cheshire. Thank you all.

I will still keep you all posted, thanks again for the feedback - really appreciate it.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to reply again after the other night to say thanks for all your replies with the help. It does mean a lot. I just wanted to let you know an update with Agnes.

Her two front teeth were last loose they've actually come out completely now - and she has perked up so much, she is eating by herself, eating nuggets and eating quite quick again. She has got more energy and seems a lot like her old self again. I am still going to get her looked at by one of the vets mentioned above.

Thanks again =)
