could anyone tell me if guinea pigs are able to chew on wood to keep their teeth in good condition? we have a guinea pig that we found in our back garden and as we have read in all the info the teeth need to be kept fairly short we wondered if this would help. we'd be grateful for any info you could give us

Hi Titania, Welcome to the forum. Yes they certainly can. There teeth are constantly growing and they need to gnaw on things. They particularly like gnawing on 'hutch', at least mine do. lol. Mine tend not to eat the little fancy bits of wood that you can buy in pet shops. The bendy logs are good. Sure lots of other people will have ideas for you. xx

Yes, mine gnaw on their house too and anything else they can get their teeth into. Anything that I'm specifically bought, like a gnaw block, for that reason they've just ignored.

Things like parsley bells are good for them gnawing on and hay is good too (but then they should get that all the time anyway).

Hay is the primary item that keeps teeth worn down; essential for digestion and essential for teeth! Some pigs will gnaw on wood, but many do not.
