Hi

Peppa is about 8months old - i have had her 3 weeks from a rescue.

When i got her, all 4 teeth were broken off at different lengths - the bottom ones were very small and the top ones were longer than i would expect (but were broken off at angles). She has always eaten fine so i have just been keeping a very close eye on the top ones.

They have come along lovely - and the top ones were both the same length (but quite long) and the bottom ones evened out nicely too.

However - when i checked last night, one of the top ones has now snapped off right at the root ! I have no idea how it happened. Her teeth weren't a very nice colur when i got her - so i suspect they are suffereing due to her bad diet in the past/lack of hay.

So basically, at the moment, she has 2 small lower teeth and one long top tooth ! I have just watched her eat a big chunk of apple, and some carrot ... so she still seems to be eating nicely !

My question is - should i leave be and keep a close eye - or should i pop to the vet to get the long tooth trimmed down a bit?

Thanks
Rach

One of my piggies has broken several of his teeth and they all grew back fine However, it would be worth keeping an eye on the unbroken tooth to make sure that it doesnt get too long if your piggy is not using that tooth to eat. Its great how they just adapt to using their other teeth when one is broken. Mine broke his leaping from my arms onto the floor. I felt so guilty but know that this has happened to the most experienced owners so that helps.

You should be okay to just keep a close eye on her - as long as she is eating, the remiaing tooth should wear just fine.

I had a sow who had a lower incisor extracted last year. As it was extracted it never grew back. She did pretty well, her recovery was always going to be hindered so she did have further difficulties, but the majority of the time, that sole lower incisor posed no problems at all. I did have to rasp the upper incisors 1-2 times a week as they hadn't got the usual dental wear, but other than that she managed well.
Since Peppa has only broken her tooth, it should grow back pretty quickly.

I agree with you that her past diet is probably in some way to blame for her brittle teeth, it may take a little while for her to get the benefits of a proper, nutritious diet.

Thank you both very much for your advise.

I have been keeping a close eye on her - and will contimue to do so.

Since Peppa (&Twister) came to me they have been eating me out of house & home ... and having one less tooth does not seem to be stopping her !

Thanks again
