Oh Wiebke.....Hugs..to you and Telwyn...please both of you stay strong......I'm going through the same thing with Beechie since last night. He does get ileus on occasions but never as bad as this last episode which has scared the pants off me.
Last night when I discovered he was developing a problem...I.gave him zantac 4mg/kg; metacam (0.2ml)........ and septrin (0.5ml) - because I suspect he also has an emerging URI (crusty eyes and funny sounds from his nose but no nasal discharge....vet confirmed this morning)
Up most of the night feeding CC and water alternately...5.0ml every 2hrs. Went to bed at 4am thinking he was rallying....but at 8am this morning i really didn;t think he would last the trip to the vets....whites of his eyes showing, clearly in pain, lying on his side.....
HOWEVER.........the 30min journey actually took over an hour in the snow and ice......and by the time he was taken out of his carrier he was sitting there looking like butter wouldn;t melt and chewing a piece of hay!....plus (v small) poos and wees.
He got "the works"...metoclopromide, subqfluids and subq painkiller.
He has been back home but really plunging up and down....eating here and there...relapsing...more telecons with the vet...SO
Here's what we're going to be doing tonight....
A couple of hours ago we went out for another drive lasting an hour......yay....more poos and a much more chipper piggie....got him home and immediately fed him with as much water as he would take by syringe. Also gave him his meds for tonight....zantac, metacam and septrin.
One hour on he's failing again so put him on a fleece on my knees and gently "jog him" for another 30 minutes....cue chipper piggie and more poos. This time syringe him with CC and give him lettuce (he will eat if it is put immediately in front of his face)
So I guess it's either "jogging indoors" or "driving" every couple of hours for the rest of tonight....and alternating 5ml of water with 5ml of CC (plus hay) after each jog. Be careful about the amount of Cc you feed as it can produce more gas..........hence why I have been told to alternate with water....most important thing is to keep hydrated otherwise the drugs can harm the kidneys.
Tomorrow...if no improvement in urine output it;s back to the vet for a repeat of today......
Beechie had gut stasis for over 48 hours this time last year.......the metoclopromide took about 24 hours to start working.. I was syringe feeding him like crazy.....and, just as i took him back into the vet thinking "no imporvement so this was it"...... he suddenly produced a lot of air gun pellets in his pet carrier (I;m sure the vet thought i was a neurotic...but I also can't help thinking retrospectively that the car journey might have had something to do with Beechies sudden "ourburst" ) ..
It took another few days before his poos got back to normal....
Hope this helps with Telwyn.....thinking of you both (perhaps joggin or driving tonight?)
