It has not been a great weekend for me, and it has ended in coming back home to find Telyn not right. This morning, she was completely off food, very apathetic and was running a fever and was having slimy, smelly poo - what little there was.

I have immediately put her on Critical Care and probiotics in small but frequent doses to tidy her over until she could be seen by a vet. There she got an injection of metroclopramide (I hope I have got that right) to restart her guts. Thankfully she has started to perk up again a little bit in the late afternoon and has even shown interest in a small bit of cucumber.

I have to continue my treatment of giving her CC and probiotics, but have to take her back to the vet if her belly is not back to its rumbly self by tomorrow.

Please send her your vibes! She is still pretty poorly.

Poor baby, I hope she is feeling much better soon.

I am sorry to hear this, stasis is not good at all. You did get the drug name right BTW, metoclopramide, gut stimulent, used in cases of bloat as well.

Will be keeping my fingers tightly crossed for her. xx

sorry to hear she is unwell did the vet give you metroclopramide liquid to give her while at home? at a dose of 1ml 3 times a day until she is eating and passing poops normal ?x

Aww, bless poor Telyn :( I hope she is feeling her normal self soon. Vibes heading your way :)

How is she doing? It sounds as if you are doing everything possible, please keep us updated xx

No, on consideration he didn't give it to me, but I will certainly contact the vets if Telyn is not improved by tomorrow morning so she will be seen as soon as feasible. Telyn has been fairly good at taking her CC, as long as I give it little but often, and has certainly tucked into a little bit of cucumber again this evening, but is not interested in hay at all.

She is still feeling very sorry for herself but has generally been a bit more with it this evening.

Oh Wiebke.....Hugs..to you and Telwyn...please both of you stay strong......I'm going through the same thing with Beechie since last night. He does get ileus on occasions but never as bad as this last episode which has scared the pants off me.

Last night when I discovered he was developing a problem...I.gave him zantac 4mg/kg; metacam (0.2ml)........ and septrin (0.5ml) - because I suspect he also has an emerging URI (crusty eyes and funny sounds from his nose but no nasal discharge....vet confirmed this morning)

Up most of the night feeding CC and water alternately...5.0ml every 2hrs. Went to bed at 4am thinking he was rallying....but at 8am this morning i really didn;t think he would last the trip to the vets....whites of his eyes showing, clearly in pain, lying on his side.....

HOWEVER.........the 30min journey actually took over an hour in the snow and ice......and by the time he was taken out of his carrier he was sitting there looking like butter wouldn;t melt and chewing a piece of hay!....plus (v small) poos and wees.

He got "the works"...metoclopromide, subqfluids and subq painkiller.

He has been back home but really plunging up and down....eating here and there...relapsing...more telecons with the vet...SO

Here's what we're going to be doing tonight....
A couple of hours ago we went out for another drive lasting an hour......yay....more poos and a much more chipper piggie....got him home and immediately fed him with as much water as he would take by syringe. Also gave him his meds for tonight....zantac, metacam and septrin.

One hour on he's failing again so put him on a fleece on my knees and gently "jog him" for another 30 minutes....cue chipper piggie and more poos. This time syringe him with CC and give him lettuce (he will eat if it is put immediately in front of his face)

So I guess it's either "jogging indoors" or "driving" every couple of hours for the rest of tonight....and alternating 5ml of water with 5ml of CC (plus hay) after each jog. Be careful about the amount of Cc you feed as it can produce more gas..........hence why I have been told to alternate with water....most important thing is to keep hydrated otherwise the drugs can harm the kidneys.

Tomorrow...if no improvement in urine output it;s back to the vet for a repeat of today......

Beechie had gut stasis for over 48 hours this time last year.......the metoclopromide took about 24 hours to start working.. I was syringe feeding him like crazy.....and, just as i took him back into the vet thinking "no imporvement so this was it"...... he suddenly produced a lot of air gun pellets in his pet carrier (I;m sure the vet thought i was a neurotic...but I also can't help thinking retrospectively that the car journey might have had something to do with Beechies sudden "ourburst" ) ..
It took another few days before his poos got back to normal....

Hope this helps with Telwyn.....thinking of you both (perhaps joggin or driving tonight?)

x

GET WELL BEECHIE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Really sorry to hear he's going thru another bout again :(
Many healing wheeeeeeeeks and loves from the girls and I xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope Telyn feels better soon. We've just been to the vet this afternoon with Gerry, he knows how you're feeling as he's had a poorly tummy this weekend as well and didn't want to eat either.(not the same thing as Telyn though but he can sympathise)
I think there's something in Pebble's post about jogging and the car movement. When I took Gerry to the vet on saturday he was bloated before we went but was ok once we got to the vet. Our usual vet who we saw today said the best thing she can advise for a bloated pig is to keep them moving, chase them round the living room she said lol Peter Gurney said to put them on a vibrating pillow for 20 minutes. Ours unfortunately wouldn't work yesterday when we tried it so he got a tummy massage instead.

Fingers and paws crossed for a full and quick recovery. x

That's what Oscascious had. Simon gave me Zantac, which is also a gut stimulant, and I was to continue with it at home until his guts were right again. It did the job. I was waiting for my husband's prescription in Boots yesterday and was idly looking around, and saw it on the shelf behind the counter! So you can buy it for human beans too! I'm guessing that might mean it's not a lisenced drug for Piggles, but not sure.
I send so much love and vibes for your little girl. Please keep up updated. Crossed paws X x

Sorry to hear Beechie has issues again Pebble. What you mentioned about the car journey helping shake some poops out of him, very true. I invested in a massage pad this year after Dexter's bloating incident - godsend. I used it for Gwenny with her heart and joint troubles, and lately for a boarder suffering bloat who - although helped by the massage pad - sadly didn't make it.

How is Telyn this morning, Wiebke?

Thinking of you and Telyn - hope she's a bit better this morning.

x

I am very relieved to say that Telyn is much more her old self this morning. She's had her Critical Care when the others were having their breakfast veg, but she's joined the Tribe for pellets and fresh hay, so it looks very likely that we may not have to make a vet trip today.

Of course, I will keep on topping her up with CC and will be keeping a close a eye on her and her poos. But I am now a lot more positive about a good recovery.

I am so sorry to hear about your renewed problems with Beechie, Pebbles! I hope that you can pull him through again. Telyn has had a touch of a stuffy nose this morning when eating (which was one of my problems yesterday morning - I wasn't sure at first whether her problem was guts or URI).

I would not be surprised if she had picked up some URI bugs of my two URI piggies in her weakened state, but I am reluctant to hit her with baytril before I am sure that her guts have stabilised.

Sending my vibes to Beechie!

Hi Wiebke

That's great news about Telwyn...you must be starting to uncross your fingers slightly.

Totally agree about keeping off the baytril in vew of her condition....Beechie is now overnighting at the vets and is off septrin on the grounds that the gut problem is more of a threat to him atm than the URI.

Hope she continues to improve and is soon back to her normal self.

x

Sorry Wiebke I don't come on here much lately so have only just seen this :red
I'm glad Telyn is a little better - I hope she is back to normal very soon x
