Hi, my name is Melissa and I am from Nova Scotia, Canada. I recently went to a rabbit/cavy convention in Ohio, USA and bought a breeding pair of texel Guinea pigs. The female is 4 weeks now, and the male is about 6 weeks. Anyway, I have 2 other female Guinea pigs (not texels), so this would be my first boar. I'm not sure what his penis is supposed to look like but his is looking larger than normal to me, dry, and he's getting pee all over himself. I'm cutting matt's off of him daily and it's catching. Could someone give me any advice? Still trying to figure out how to attach photos..

Hi and welcome!

Please be aware that we are a rescue friendly forum. We do not support intentional breeding in any form.

Your girl is now old enough for a teenage pregnancy, which is going to tax her tiny and still growing body and can do lasting damage, especially deform or even break her pelvis. A pregnancy at this early age will divert much needed nutrients at a time when they are needed to build up her own body. I hope that you are aware that every 4th-5th pregnancy ends with the death of pups and/or mum; that is a high price in lives. Have a look at our (unplanned) pregnancy section, and you will find it littered with casualties even with the best of care! Several of my sows bear the lifelong scars of too early pregnancies through ignorance/neglect or intential breeding. :(

Texels have fur that is very like a sponge. Who is your boy living with? If it is with your little girl, then she is simply peeing at him all the time to tell him not to pester her, as sows do.

Hi, thanks for your advice. My boar is not living with any other pigs and I have no intentions on breeding them anytime soon. I am still undecided if I want to breed them at all. The question was simply about the health of the boar.

Thank you for clarifying that!

What bedding is he on? Are the wet patches all over the body are they more around the bottom end, which we recommend to keep cut short, especially around the genitals and between the legs; basically in all the places that tend to mat quickly. Guinea pigs often drag their bum ends along the floor in order to scent mark. Some boars are scattier than others, and any amount of gunk can end up in their penis and pouch.
