Thank heavens everything seems to be better today!
What happened was..
I went outside to feed the guinea pigs and as I was about to feed Sunshine I immediately noticed something was wrong :... She was just sitting there, her nose was stuffed with crust around it and she was gasping for air!
I went straight to the vet with my fiance's mum. We asked the vet if this could be a case of Fly strike but the he said that there was no possibility of that as her belly looked fine as it should + her bum. Her heart was normal as well but when he got to the lungs he could hear that there were lots of fluid in them and that this is causing her to gasp for air. I honestly can't remember if he said the chest infection she had is called Pneumia, but he said that to be honest it does not look like it's going to be good news (in other words he thought she weren't going to pull through this) and that started a waterfall 8...
Anyway, he gave Sunshine a dose of antibiotics (baytrill) and something that should clear most of the fluid in her lungs and told us to take her inside and keep her warm and offer her nice treats to encourage her to eat. We were now scheduled to come in for a check-up today at 9.30am.
As the day passed, it seemed like Sunshine was gaining a bit more strength and she began to eat cucumber and grass. We thought that maybe there was hope for her that she was going to be OK
We woke up this morning and went to check on her in the cage we put her in inside the house and her condition was definitely improved! she was breathing normal (although she was breathing a little bit fast) and she was running around eating and was hard to catch, just as she would've been before she got sick. So we went to the vet this morning, but this time it was another vet seeing us. Anyway, she checked Sunshine and confirmed that she was definitely improved; the fluids in her lungs has gone and she's more lively and energetic
So today we were sent home with 4-5 syringes of baytrill and the vet told us she needs to have 1 syringe every day and after that she should be completely cured. We are cautios about putting her outside still as we were told the other piggys could catch the infection from her so we will keep her inside for the week
. We cleaned out every corner and every hutch + bought new water bottles and food bowls for all the pigs as we were worried they might of had some bacteria on them.
So all in all it's been a fantastic day with great news!
