I'm afraid I've not been on her much over the last couple of weeks, I've been a bit down about all things piggy.

I'm hopeful we've turned a corner today, it's a long story so pop the kettle on, go on treat yourself, have a biscuit!

A week last wednesday I was busy cleaning the piggies out ready for my friend Debbie to come over and pig sit while I went the the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for a long weekend til the sunday for work and a little holiday with my friend Emma. Well I put all the piggies back in their houses after weighing them, picked up Hector to do my checks and found a huge, and I mean huge lump all across his tummy. I phoned the vet straight away and they got me an appointment in 20 minutes so I popped him in his carry box, jumped in the shower as I was stinky from cleaning them out and dashed to the vets. I went to the ones a couple of minutes up the road as it was nearly 5.30pm and my usual one 30 minutes away closes at 6.00pm so I didn't want to risk not getting there in time.
He did an ultrasound and found it was a huge abscess, the odd thing was there was no bite wound and it wasn't in the right place to be a very long (4 months) post neutering problem so we don't know what caused it. The only thing I could think of was an insect bite as he'd been on the grass a couple of days before.

So the vet drained it out, I held him while the did the ultrasound and draining which was interesting to see if a little stinky! So much pus came out it was horrible and he was so well behaved. I like to think it helped that I was with him because the vet commented on how good he was. He put him on 0.4ml of Baytril a day and gave me a 5ml! syringe and said to flush it out with salt water three times a day and come back if it comes up again.

Obviously not easy to do from Edinburgh! So I got home and picked up Debbie and told her what was happening, my neighbour Natalie came popped round and got the full story as well and said she would help Debbie do his meds and cleaning and check on him while Debbie was at work. I was feeling reasured but obviously not wanting to leave him. So they said to decide in the morning. I slept on it and had decided he would be fine and in good hands, Natalie has had rescue Bunnies and dealt with this kind of thing before and I know she can handle piggies as she holds them for me when I cut their nails. So I had a shower, came downstairs and Debbie was watching Hector and Matilda as they were chattering teeth at each other, lots of bum wiggling, shreaking from Matilda, basically not good! They're usually so loved up so this was a major fall out for them and completely unexpected.

By this time I'm beside myself, I'm meant to be leaving to get a train in half an hour so I dashed round with Debbie's help and set up another pen to split them up as they were getting really nasty with each other. Any way I missed my train and was so upset I just couldn't get myself together to think about going away. What a disaster!

Later on when they were settled I tried to see if it was possible to rearrange my train ticket but it was going to cost £83! it was only £100 for the return! so that wasn't an option. So I looked to see if I could drive to my parents in Coventry and get a train to Derby then catch up with my last train from Derby to Edinburgh as there was mean to be over an hour wait in Derby. Worked it all out and discovered I needed to of left 5 minutes before! At that point Debbie said there are too many signs telling me not to go so I gave in and didn't go. I did have a good weekend with Debbie who stayed anyway which was nice but it was meant to be my first time away for two years. I've not even had a single night away from home!

It's just as well I didn't go, it swelled up again and I took him to my usual vet that afternoon, and the following day, and on the monday and am going back again tomorrow.

Hector has most definately spent all my spending money for the weekend, £160 in fact in less than a week! My vet let me off one consultancy fee when I told her bless her.

So I'm still at home and don't think I'll ever try and book anything ever again! Last time I just tried to go to London for the day I had a migraine so couldn't go. I'm not destined to leave Newbury!

I rang Anna at Wheek and Squeak who I adopted them from for advice and set up the pens next to each other so they could still see each other. Yesterday I set up another temporary pen (number 6 in my lounge!) gave them both a bath and reunited them. They were absolutely fine for the first 5 minutes, just like they'd never been apart. Then the teeth chattering started and my heart sank. They were on and off for a couple of hours, not going for each other just all noise. They finally settled until I took Hector out that evening for his meds and they started off again when I put him back in, just as I was about to go to bed! They did settle down again so I left them together over night. Well this morning I've but them back into their original house and Hector started popcorning, there was a mad charging round from both of them, clearly happy to be home, they had breakfast together and have settled down to sleep.

Fingers crossed it stays that way.

So that was the week that was.

Thanks for listening (if you're still with me and my dramas!) :))

Has anyone ever experienced pigs falling out when one's not well?

What a nightmare for you! But glad to hear that Hector is still going well!

Piggies can fall out over illness, yes; especially if it is something that might endanger the survival of the whole group. It may just be the smell of the abscess and the meds. Hopefully, he and Mathilda are getting better now.

I read it all with my hot chocolate xx>>>. I was thinking can't believe you went to the Edinburgh festival as I was there to! It was rubbish though, you made the right decision staying with the pigs!

I think pigs can get nasty if another isn't well - as it's a weakness and he probably smelt different because of the med's etc!

I'm glad they are getting on better now and sending healing wheeks to Hector!

He's very lucky having such a dedicated piggy mum - and although you lost out on the train fare at least you had your spending money to pay the vet!

Pigs... rolleyes

Thanks Wiebke. He did stink! The thing was they were fine for hours after we got back from the vet, it was over night sometime (which was only 5 hours) that they fell out.
They clearly didn't want me to go!

Thankfully work paid for my train fare and accommodation but you can imagine they weren't very impressed when I told them why I didn't go!

Oh you poor thing. You have been through such a lot. When guinea pigs live together they all smell the same and if they smell different the other piggies believe they are not from the same herd. I think that is what would have caused the problem and the falling out. Once he is off the medication I bet they will all get on again. I really hope his absess heals soon.

What a to-do! Big hugs missus.

I'm glad Hector is on the mend and that all piggies are friends again. :)

It sounds like you've had such a nightmare these past few days. Lets hope that all the piggies stay friends and that Hector continues to improve.

I don't know too much about guinea pig bonds if I'm honest, luckily, touch wood, non of mine have ever broken down. But with rabbits if one smells different/has been carted off to the vets on their own etc it can disrupt the bond. Would it be possible to maybe take them both to the vets together in future? I always do that with my bunnies and it works fine. Tends to calm down the ill one because their cage mate is there and the other one isn't left at home alone wondering what's going on.

What a horrible few days for all of you. Hope Hector is feeling better soon.

Matilda went with him. I always keep them with their friend for moral support. It was in the middle of the night they started, they'd been together at home for about 6 hours before they kicked off. Odd that they should be ok to start with. My theory is she was sniffing him and pestering him and he got cross. I think the local anesetic must of worn off in the night aswell so he was perhaps a bit sore and grumpy. He's on Rimadyl now as well and did perk up after he was started on that.

Just taken Hector and Matilda to the vets. Hector's abscess is looking a lot smaller so she was hopefully that one last drain would do the trick. What came out was very thick pink stuff, like the putty stuff dentists use to make molds of teeth. Too thick to drain so he's going in for a GA so she can clear it all out as it's not coming out through a syringe.
Thought we were nearly there but sadly not.

Also Matilda is now on Baytril. She's always been quite a noisey breather, like she's out of breath when I've picked her up. With nothing runny and it going as quickly as it comes I've not worried too much and thought it might just be a slight allergy but I got Jenny to check her over just in case. She's having some Baytril each day for a week to see if it clears up. Thankfully her and Hector are both fine in themselves and still happily stuffing their faces.

I am dispairing with all these poorly piggies. I sad to my vet "what am I doing wrong?!" she said I'm just having a lot of bad luck and being so vigalent that I spot the slightest change in them because I know them so well where as most poor pigs are left in the hutch in the bottom of the garden with their owner never noticing if their a little off their food, have a lump or noisey breathing, then one day they die and they wonder why.
Does help to reasure me but I think I've had enough bad luck. All I can think is I must of been a terrible person in a former life because I'm sure I haven't done anything to deserve this. Not wanting to wish the year away but roll on 2012 and a better year.

Don't beat yourself up...guineas are fantastic at all being ill at the same time! Usually just before or during a holiday or a particularly busy period at work...they just time it spectacularly well! Like you say, people on this forum will typically be a lot more sensitive to anything out of the ordinary.

I think we share the same vets in Tilehurst? I go there so often now they suggested they move me in recently....LOL. I only have six piggies but when one is ill you can guarantee the others will feel left out and want to share an illness or two! I am currently going through the same with mine, all minor things but a lot of hassle and at home its like a scene from Animal Hospital!

With regards to the teeth chattering etc. I think it totally depends on the herd size, age, size of cage etc. I have seen both, indeed one poor little girl was severely picked on when sick once and had to separated (all was fine once she had recovered), I have had others 'nurse' sick piggies and on one particular occasion I have seen one piggiy either side of a sick one keeping her warm. It just varies but its quite normal for all the reasons mentioned and becasue they like to keep us guessing!

I am sure all will be well very shortly and we do have one of the best guinea vets to help us :))

I go to Jenny Towers at Active Vet Care in Tilehurst. She's brilliant.
I did say I was considering moving near them and commuting to Newbury having been there three days in a row! :))

Just dropped Hector off at the vets for his op. 8... Keeping fingers crossed and my phone by me all morning. :...
Please can we have some healing vibes and wheeks?

Yep I use Jenny. She is so good is'nt she? I am certain without her persistence and knowledge at least one of my guineas would not be here today after a huge baldderstone op where most vets would not have bothered.

Maybe we shuold set up a home nearby and share? I am pretty much there every week with one thing and another...even the receptionists now comment on it...frankly its embarrassing @)

Massive Healing Vibes heading your way! xx>>>

:)) you know you go too often when the receptionist know you :))

Sending lots of love and healing vibes to beautiful Hector x

Sorry couldn't get on before now to update.
Thank you for everyone's healing vibes, they've done the trick.
Hector's fine, he's doing really well and is home stuffing his face.
I got some fresh sweetcorn as a treat for them all so they've been tucking in to that. Will upload some pictures.
Bless him he wasn't having any of it when I tried to give him his meds, he just wanted a cuddle, he was sat on a cushion on the coffee table and just leapt for me every time. So I gave in and we had a nice cuddle on the sofa first.
