Just returned home from the vets after taking maisie to have her teeth checked following her dribbling etc.

the vet has told me that her teeth are growing inwards into her tongue and that they can file them down over a few months to see if they will learn to grow over it instead but this would mean constant GA which is obviously risky, so he has basicly told me to have her PTS because of the risk in GA and costs. i really dont want to do it, please help me guys I'm absolutely devestated. is there no way they can have back teeth removed? then surely it would be problem solved i would just have to mush all her food like i am at the mo. please help :(
 
I am sorry for your vet's diagnosis.

Can you contact the CCT in Cambridge and either go there or get the address of a rodentologist in your region from there? I think Laura-CCC4 has Vedra's contact number.

Dental treatment by an experienced rodentologist or vet does not need GA. It is certainly worth a try; several people on here have piggies with long term dental problems.
 
I agree that having her PTS isn't necessary if she is otherwise ok, however the risks of continual GA for frequent dental work is obviously very serious and I do understand how this decision has come up. The issue is that GA shouldn't be needed for the problem you describe.

Can you travel at all?
 
i was thinking CCT dont really think i could talk to her at the moment cant stop crying its so awful she so little i dont want to give up on her.
 
can you not travel to another vets or CCT where they can do them with out a GA has i have a guinea pig with AP who needs them doing every 3 days until they are growing a little better then hoping every 4 wks-c

there is vets that WILL do them with out GA so really having your guinea PTS is not needed..the thing that is needed is a vet that will do it with out GA people on here will know of a vet that will do it with out GA x
 
Vedra number is 07721 026401. You can text if you're not up to talking, explain that you have a pig who needs dental treatment and just ask for an appointment.

If you're not already a member, you'll have to join - fee is £30 per year, regardless of how many piggies you have - and it entitles you to free dental work amongst other things.

me and my OH are willing to travel anywhere within reason. We absolutely love her and dont want to just have her PTS.
 
AWW Honey so sorry for your news.

There have been so many inspirational stories on here of guineas getting dental treatment from experienced people and managing the problem without constant GA's.

I hope there is someone within travelling distance for you.

Fingers crossed, let us know if you're heading off to Vedra's, I'm sure she'll be able to give Maisie (and you and your OH!) the lifeline you all need.

(If you do bring her up to Vedra you're welcome to pop in and say hello. I have some of the "rolls-royce" syringes you may find useful for syringe-feeding as well, easier to work with than most.)
 
me too, shes such a happy little piggie and is still eating her mushed food i just do not want to give up on her. if vedra can help thats where she will go so fingers crossed
 
Might be worth dropping furryfriends a message on here as she has a lot of experience in dealing with pigs with dental problems. As has been said if the pig is okay other than his teeth it seems a shame to have him pts.
 
so hope she will be ok, does anyone know if it is possible to have back teeth removed?

Have just heard back from Vedra at CCT and am going up friday hopefully just waiting for confirmation. She said she will sort her out so fingers crossed Maisie will get the help she needs. I would like to thank you all so so much for your help i really was beside myself earlier and didnt think i was going to be able to get her help. Thanks again everyone x

Re molar extraction, it's been discussed on Guinea Lynx before, the general view is that it's really not feasible. I've also been in contact with someone who had their guineas infected molar extracted; even though it was infected, it was firmly rooted in the jaw as normal. While this piggie's surgery went well, it was an exceptionally difficult procedure for the vet to carry out - and we're talking a very experienced vet who did the surgery.
 
Hi sweetie i went thru this for over a year, if you have a vet or rodentologist who can do this toofie work without a GA it's so much better. Unfortunately in OZ we don't but my vet only put my boy Duke under for 15-20 mins at a time, he did a brill job with him. He was not confident to do it without a GA as our vets do not get the experience from working with enough piggies or the knowledge from experienced vets/rodentologists who know so much!

One comment i'm not sure of......the molars growing towards the tongue? Piggies toofies do naturally curve into the centre i'm sure? maybe i read that wrong mallethead

re talking to furryfriends she knows all about it, her little girl was dependant on toofie trims weekly and fortnightly and her vet Simon was a godsend, he kept Pops going with his care and non invasive treatments x)
 
Overgrown molars on the bottom (mandibular molars) curve inwards, over the tongue. Overgrown molars on the top (maxillary molars) curve outwards, towards the cheeks.
 
from what i could understand he meant they were growing directly towards her tongue and would grow into the side of it rather that curving to go over it. thanks for the advice :)
