Hi I have just done the dental course at the CCT (not offering services as have no plan to practice) but I am recommending that if you are confident with your piggy and she need long term work it might be worth you investing in the tools and going on the course to lean how to do it yourself

Best of luck at the CCT, I am sure vedra can do something for maisie

hello everyone i took Maisie up to see Vedra today and its good news :) there is absolutely nothing wrong with her back teeth so the vet had no reason at all to want to put her to sleep! furious with the vet! but luckily i didnt listen to him so poor Maisie escaped death!

Her bottom front teeth were a bit long and one had cracked so Vedra removed it and now Maisie is happily eating away :) I popped into the garden centre nearby (thanks laura) and grabbed some alfalfa hay for my girlies and a little treat for Maisies journey home.

Another thing she had was mites which i had suspected and i have been given 'flea or die' shampoo to do both the girls. I'm going to leave it until tomoro as its bit chilly now. Vedra said its ok to do Evie although she is pregnant but i dont know wether to wait until babies arrive? or will this mean they will then have them too? Should have asked Vedra but didnt think, Evie is very easily stressed out and doesnt even like to be stroked so bit unsure.

Anyway just thought id let you know how i got on and how happy we all are to have Maisie back home, Thanks everyone for your advice :)
 
isnt it just! i couldnt believe that there was nothing wrong with them at all, i thought maybe he had over exagerated but never thought there was nothing at all, well not with the back teeth and he never even mensioned her front ones and they were the problem.

Scares me to think what would of happened if i had decided to have her teeth done there or even worse PTS! She would have been put under GA for nothing and he probably would have completely stuffed her back teeth up! Useless! grrrr
 
Its a good lesson for us all really - we do tend to trust vets and they are not always right as this shows. I think you should be patting yourself on the back to be honest for questioning it and finding alternatives.

Wow! Good news! I'm so happy for you and Maisie!

Your post makes me a little sad too... I won't be able to give my piggies the opportunity to go to the CCT for a second opinion... I wish we had rodentologists over here!
 
Well i cant honestly say without this forum i would never have known about the CCT and therefore little Maisie would probably not be here today. Big thanks to you all on here and of course Vedra for all the work she does she really is an inspiration to us all.
 
I am glad it went well today, the relief must be enormous. Is Maisie eating for herself yet? Must have been a funny feeling for her, trying to pick food up with a dodgy front tooth, might explain a bit.

Glad you found the garden centre too. :)

i said to you didnt i in the pm that her teeth may not even be that bad:)):)) i learnt this with ralphie when he had his teeth done under GA when infact there was nothing wrong with them,it is so much easier isnt it with out a GA?/ and makes you wonder why most vets only do it under GA:(

I am glad that Maisie has been sorted and hope that she will be up to her old strength soon!
 
When decision like this come up, I think it is very important to get a second opinion and I'm very glad you did.

I am sure Maisie is glad too :).

Yeah its lovely in there, i looked like a loon walking around with Maisie in her spotty blanket :) there was no way i was leaving her in the car! Got their alfalfa hay and Maisie a little treat.

She hasnt stopped eating since we came home, vedra gave her a dandelion leaf but she didnt eat it and sulked all the way home but shes fine now. Bought her some sweetcorn (which she loves) and shes happily ripped it to shreds :)

I'm so glad i took her she wasnt stressed at all and it was such a relief to find that she infact had nothing seriously wrong :)
 
yes I'm so pleased its lovely to see her munching away again, i sat earlier on the end of my bed just watching her tuck in to her dinner :)

I am 1 happy piggie mum :<>
 
Glad to hear she isn't PTS. Vets sometimes haven't a clue. My little Mirtle (RIP) had to be PTS because she had a tumour. Dental problems can be sorted.

I am happy to hear she's been eating, progress indeed. Did Vedra take the whole tooth out i.e. pulled out of the gum, or was it cut down/broken off? I had a three-incisored pig, Tuppy had cracked at gum level after a period of struggling with end-on occlusion, the tooth became loose, Vedra pulled it easily and it never grew back!
 
So glad to hear you had a good experience at the cct and that maisie is fighting fit! the probably got confused with a rabbit when looking at the teeth rabbits are flat, guineas are slanted at the back! I would go back to the vets and tell them that is the only way for them to learn that they are doing it wrong!
 
So pleased to read that she's doing so well and able to tuck into her fave veg again already. What a brilliant turnaround! So pleased you were able to take her there x

vedra pulled it out easily little bit of blood but Maisie wasnt fased at all. Gave them both a bath today was very scared of scaring Evie with her being ready to drop anyday but although she wheeked the whole time shes so much happier now :)

thats what I'm going to do i think, they clearly know nothing at all
 
if my guinea pigs ever have problems other than weight, i intend to take them to the exotics specialist that my geckos see. guinea pigs are technically exotic pets (though they're so domesticated, you wouldn't really think it). but my normal vet is still pretty good with them. yours sounds like he must've been just a bit of an idiot {:|

so glad little Maisie is okay, and that you managed to get her all sorted. she'll never know how narrowly she escaped a very untimely death.

kudos to you for getting a second opinion. you saved her life just by doing that xx>>>
