CharlottiesPiggies

I have to say thanks so much to whoever recommended it to me, its a fantastic book, and I have come to the assumption that 5 of my 8 are purebreeds - ooo-errrr

Its fantastic with the diseases and illnesses, its just what I need to get me started on Rodentology.

Where can u get it from, and what is the title, i have been looking 4 a really good book for ages

Julie

I have searched high and low throughout NZ for this book. Its worth it though.I have the rabbit version

Caryl - I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk, was not that expensive actually :-)

Not sure what I like better, the guinea lynx handbook or the piglopedia.

I am still hoping to get Vedras Diagnostic Guide for my birthday, because I am sure that will be topping both of the above :-)

Think it may have been me who recommended the Piglopaedia. Mine cost about £10 from a shop called "The Range",but I've seen them on ebay, I've also got one called Diseases of Domestic Guinea Pigs by V.C.G Richardson-a vet that bred & showed piggies. Its a veterinary orientated book, expensive but excellent as it just focuses on the medical side and tells you bout conventional and homeopathic remedies, also a good read for your vet if they aren't too confident with piggy potions. I've got that book and I like it, but I was sure that I read somewhere it is believed there are a few mistakes in it or something?

Yes thats very true. because this is what it says about hutch sizes on page 31

"For two guinea pigs, a hutch or cage (2 feet x 15 inches x 15 inches) gives them ample room. They never feel safe in a hutch or run that is larger owing to their poor eyesight". 98)

When the minimum size for 2 pigs is 4ft by 2ft! ::). It even goes on to suggest on page 93 that treating them for mites is very difficult

"Treatment is quite difficult. Hay mites are not susceptible to many of the common antiparations, and resistance develops readily. However, it is often possible to reduce the numbers considerably, especially if a combination of preparations is used. This may lead to over-dosage, as one preparation may potentiate the effect of the other and it is important to consider whether the cure is worse then the disease. As a consequence, many only treat pigs that go to shows."

It even has 13 pages solely about breeding, & also 13 pages just about showing pigs!. :tickedoff:

yes but 13 pages about responsible breeding ?

admittedly 2ft x 15inch x 15 inch isn't big enough but most petshop hutches are bigger than that, most of mine are 4x2, but who says the minimum for 2pigs is 4ft x 2ft ?

Think it should be clarified it's the piglopaedia that talks bout breeding/showing/hutch size, the diseases of domestic guinea pigs does what it says on the tin & describes symptoms/cause/treatments etc
