is this ESSENTIAL?

I got Delailh pellets from pets at home as i was told to start her on them.....i mixed them in with her Gerty food......only **** is she doesnt touch the pellets :(

It burgess excell she has i think its a yellow bag......i noticed the other day it has mint in it which i didnt know...she doesnt like mint and the other day when i put it on top of her veggies the other day she refused to eat it even after we took the mint off (until she got hungry shes ususally right in there)

i know she likes Gerty and ive posted a few pics of her muching it.

advice appreciated! xxxxx

Have got to say I have heard bad things said about Gerty (apparently its the colouring in it,or so i have read ) but my 2 rescue girlies were fed on it and love it - and its not cheap!my two old ladies however love the harringtons pellets because they are small and easy to eat - they dont like the science selective or burgess, especially now burgess are like giant half moons.

The only reason i got Gerty was because thats what shes been fed on while at the pet shop......which was 6 months.
I can get her other stuff, but dont know weather to take Gerty away all together, and start her on another pellet?! Urgh!

Is there a particular reason you want to change the food?

My blackbeard also won't eat anything but museli, I have tried to switch him to pellets twice with no success, i was only doing this to prevent 'selective feeding'. Thinking about it now it seems silly becuase he wolfs down all his museli.
So unless its a problem, could you just stick to what your using? Or perhaps another museli brand....

Pets at home do a museli with little pieces of pepper and hay in it, I've tried mine on that and they liked it, they also eat gerty and wagg museli x.

i only want to change it simply because i was told to by the pet shop.....but I'm unsure as to why.....like why feed a piggie on gerty for 6 months + then expect the their owner to change it?
I'm so confused.
She seems happy i just want to do right by her.

As long as she is happy and tucking into it all rather than leaving half of it, I wouldnt worry too much. I have fed my boys Gerty before without any issue. There is some discussion as to the dye products used to colour the food, but you could always try contacting them for more details? Most companies are pretty obliging and will happily answer any questions you have ( have badgered a few myself:x ).

I say stick with it if they're healthy and happy then :)
Let us knpow if you find anything out about dye's in gerty etc.
If it helps i don't think Wagg is particularly colorful - I mean there are green bits but they are squashed peas, lol.
:)

how long have you offered her the new pellets? maybe try for a while, adding a few in each time and see if she will eventually try them? i think pellets would be much better, although dry food isn't a huge part of their diet anyway and not absolutely essential (except in some cases) so if she is eating hay well, then she would only need a small amount anyway, so even if she never takes to pellets, at least she won't be having alot of the museli. :)

Pellets necessity in piggies diets is always down to personal preference, some members dont feed any dry food atall, others mix muesli and pellets other just muesli and others just pellets.

Have you tired the Burgess excel Blackcurrant and Oregano nuggets? I am yet to hear of a piggie who wont eat them, i feed mine on them and they LOVE them and other than wagg crunch wont eat anything else.

Gerty also do a nugget/pellet form of the museli, might be worth a try if you want to get onto pellets and gerty is all she will eat.

xx

My piggies used to eat both muesli (wagg crunch) and pellets (all varieties) but they slowly lost interest in pellets and I found I was throwing most of them away.

I have taken pellets from their diet now and they are quite happy just eating the Wagg guinea pig crunch.

I say feed your piggies what they enjoy. I know I would hate to be fed something I didn't like and nothing else.

So long as your piggies have a wide variety of veggies and a constant supply of hay, they should be fine.

Gerty is the only dried mixed food our girls will eat, then it's mainly the 3 different colour pellets. They leave the what I call hard cornflakes & most of the rest. We've tried just about everything else & ended up giving it away.

They love readi-grass & clear the bowl apart from the dusty remains everyday during the winter, not as much when they're getting fresh grass. They get lots of fresh food twice a day, at lease six or more of the following:- romaine lettuce, cucumber, carrot, apple, kale, peppers, melon (yellow or watermelon), tomato, celery, brocolli & cauli (many the leaves). I think that if they're getting plenty of fresh stuff they probably don't need the dried food as much but it's always there for them.

They also love the compressed hay wheels you can buy in a pack in Wilkinson's these last 1 to 2 weeks & I think they're good for their teeth too.

I struggled so bad to find a food that my piggies would eat. They would just refuse to eat the food. My first 3 guinea pigs loved Science Selective guinea pig food and would clear their bowls. But then I had other piggies and they wouldnt touch the stuff.. and I didnt really want to go around buying all these different foods!

So i bought a bag of Excel Blackcurrant and Oregano for them all to try and it has gone down a treat! Every single of them love it and clear their bowls everyday!

Oh well atleast it seems it isnt esstenial.

She has unlimited amount of hay and she is always eatting it.

She loves her Gerty if uve seen pics ive posted of her climbing up the side of a container thats what we store her food in and shes always in there trying for more.

Weve been trying her on pellets for 3 weeks now.

Ive bought a small seperate bowl today to put just pellets in so i can keep a better eye on how much if at all shes eatting.

An her fav its her veggies and fruit......i dont think she would ever forgive us if she didnt get her daily amount! She gots super crazy popping corning hyper piggie over this :)
