There is currently an unprecedented rescue action going in California by Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue after they have been contacted by officials to take care of over 700 guinea pigs from a hoarding situation that has got way out of hand.
Lost Angeles Guinea Pig is one of the larger rescues with around 150 piggies in rescue normally.
411 sows and babies have already been got out of the place in North California and have arrived in Los Angeles at the rescue where a horse barn has been adapted for the new arrivals. Most of the recsued sows are pregnant, so will have 2-3 babies on average in the coming ten weeks, so the 411
are likely going to climb over 1000 piggies that all need to fed, medicated and cared for. A lot of especially the babies whose immune system is still under construction are affected by ringworm.
The food bill for this week alone is a staggering $900 (around £800) and it is going to triple once the nearly 300 boars are coming out and all the babies arrive...
Please take the time to watch Saskia, who runs the rescue, present in these videos here from the rescue itself and how the sows, babies and soon-to-be mamas are settling in. You will find it an eye opener!
Going into the place... expecting 250 guinea pigs!
