There is currently an unprecedented rescue action going in California by Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue after they have been contacted by officials to take care of over 700 guinea pigs from a hoarding situation that has got way out of hand.
Lost Angeles Guinea Pig is one of the larger rescues with around 150 piggies in rescue normally.

411 sows and babies have already been got out of the place in North California and have arrived in Los Angeles at the rescue where a horse barn has been adapted for the new arrivals. Most of the recsued sows are pregnant, so will have 2-3 babies on average in the coming ten weeks, so the 411
are likely going to climb over 1000 piggies that all need to fed, medicated and cared for. A lot of especially the babies whose immune system is still under construction are affected by ringworm.

The food bill for this week alone is a staggering $900 (around £800) and it is going to triple once the nearly 300 boars are coming out and all the babies arrive...

Please take the time to watch Saskia, who runs the rescue, present in these videos here from the rescue itself and how the sows, babies and soon-to-be mamas are settling in. You will find it an eye opener!

Going into the place... expecting 250 guinea pigs!

Trying to sex over 700 guinea pigs and sort them by gender by luring them out with food.

Final count update

Arriving in Los Angeles and getting their accommodation ready

All the sows and nursing babies have settled in (update from today)

If you can, please donate to help all these piggies get the care and food that they need and to help keep the rescue going over the next few months! Every single dollar and pound will make a difference!

OMG this is insane! Why would you hoard that many guinea pigs, I'm guessing because they kept breeding but why would you let it go on for so long :yikes::yikes::yikes:
That poor rescue is going to have their hands full for some time :(

On a side note, Patchy got very excited listening to all those guinea pig noises and pretty much wheeked the entire time I was watching the videos.

This is absolute madness! :soz:

I'm going to try to convince my mom to drive me down there so I can adopt one! I live in Sacramento, so its not too far!

Good grief! The 2nd video where they are all wheeking around the feeders feet’s is INSANE! Madness to think that some situations can get this bad before help arrives:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes:.

I've been following this on Facebook. I just can't believe it. The work this rescue is doing is unbelievable, I'm glad the piggies are now safe!

Has there been any information on the owner? Did they do this for commercial breeding or is it someone with a devastating mental illness that's made them hoard? If the latter, I hope they are given appropriate support or in 5 years time the rescue will be going back to the same situation...

If you want to adopt one these, you will have to wait until all piggies have been quarantined, treated and have finished their pregnancy watch/have had their babies and are ready for adoption. That is going to take 2-3 months during which time the numbers are going to rise as babies arrive.

Please be aware that Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue is a good standard rescue that will not adopt out guinea pigs into single positions, but they offer bonding with single/bereaved piggies of yours and the have plenty of already bonded pairs looking for homes.
If you want to help with a large rescue, adopting guinea pigs that are currently looking for adoption is a good way to free up spaces and reduce the number of extra mouths to feed.
My newly adopted Gareth and Teggy are both such piggies that have come here to free up much needed rescue space.

PS: Portland Guinea Pig Rescue to the north of you are also bursting full with several smaller intakes (100-200 per lot) of piggies where breeding has run out of control from as far as Washington State. If you can support either rescue r adopt from them, that would be great!

I am sure that the owner is going to be banned from keeping guinea pigs for life. There has been no more information than a this is a hoarding situation that has got way our of hand for legal reasons.
Because of the uncontrolled breeding, initial assessment from the owners or people is always a lot lower than the final number, but over 700 really takes the biscuit by a mile - that must be at least two more than the usual 3-4 generations before the alarm gets out!

We have seen large rescues of over 100-300 piggies before in the UK on a yearly or twice yearly basis in the last few years, and Queensland rescues in Australia are currently coping with a large intake of over 400 piggies (dubbed the Bundaberg rescue) in a much worse state than the Norcal piggies... :(

This is why adopting and supporting rescue is so vital, and why I am fundraising with my cakes so much. Without rescues, these piggies would have all be put to sleep.

Absolutely horrendous and so heart breaking.
Eventually managed to get my donation sent - such a technophobe!
Wanted to send from Wishlist but not managed to get into that as yet.

I've only sent a paypal donation, but whether it is via wish list or as money towards the veg and vet bill doesn't matter - anything will help them to cope, and any little really helps!

Thanks so much to everyobdy who is giving!

I think Portland is a bit too far, but I think I'll be able to do a bonding if I want to get one in LA. Thank you so much!
