Is there anyone out there in the vicinity of Oklahoma that can find me one or more black (or maybe brown or blond, just not white) self Peruvian guinea pigs (female).

Long Story Below:

Several years ago as an act of appeasement (sis wanted a dog) my mom bought each of us a guinea pig. I picked mine and she turned out to be a solid black Peruvian (mix?) with black eyes. She was kind of a brat but I loved her, but she passed away a few years ago at the ripe old age of 6.

Now for first time I'm in the position to become a guinea pig owner again! So, I've been on the hunt for another like her for few weeks now. But everywhere I go I can only find short hairs. I've found a few abbys (including a black one) that I kind of considered, but they were male. I'm sorry, but boys have a very distinct smell that I am not fond of (and I hate having to keep the area around the testicles clean). I guess I could get one neutered, but I'd rather just skip that and get two females that could be friends.

I have seriously checked all over Craigslist and the classified ads, called the shelters, searched for rescues, called the adoption centers at the pet stores, and finally even checked all the pets stores in my area. I even caved and (tried) to contact a few breeders. I have probably searched a 200 mile radius around where I live.

Now, I'm feeling pretty ridiculous that I'm being so picky (I think the pet store people think I'm nuts for being so picky about a silly "kids pet"). And I'm feeling a bit like a hypocrite. I always get angry with people that go out of their way to get dogs of certain breeds from breeders when there are shelters full of dogs. And here I've suddenly realized that I'm just like them! *horrors*

In my defense, I actually am somewhat allergic to guinea pigs (minor skin rash breakouts). I dealt with it before and will deal with it now but only if I get the fuzzies I want. So, it's them or nothing. I'm sorry short hair guinea pigs... but I'm just not going to adopt you.

I DESPERATELY want to rescue some guinea pigs though... I don't want to go to the breeders/pet store. But I just can't find the ones I want!

So, is there anyone withing about 150-250 miles of Oklahoma that knows of any guinea pigs like this they can get a hold of for me. I actually found ONE about 5 hours away in Texas but it's from a breeder. There was a trio on Petfinder (also in Texas) that were almost what I wanted... but I can only really handle a pair. Any leads would be awesome!

My original guinea pig was bought when I lived on the east coast so maybe they're a bit more common in the pet store stock there? I don't know. I've also included a picture of Shadow as a baby so you can see how cute she was (I loved her bangs).

from a non-pig forum i'm a member of.
i very politely suggested looking into rescue, and said that maybe if she visited some she might find one that she liked just as much as her previous pig- there are plenty of mixed piggies that are desperate for homes. her reply-

The nearest legitimate Rescue for these guys is over 300 miles away so unfortunately I'm not going to just drive there for fun and play with guinea pigs in the hope that I might adopt one I didn't particularly want and take it away from a perfectly good foster home. I'd rather just make a donation to the rescue itself.

is it me or is this incredably sad? i said that many pig owners would happily drive that far, and that piggie trains are also organised to transport pigs to a new home, but she wasn't interested at all.
sadly, she did end up buying a black peruvian :(

She's missing out! Why does she HAVE to have a black Peruvian?!?!

When my rabbit died when I was 19 (who was one of those pets who you really get attached to)....I couldn't face getting a rabbit for ages (like her) but when I got my rabbit about a year ago, the last thing I wanted was one that looked like my old one. Each to their own I guess.

I hope she gets what she wants and it turns out to be a right pain in the arse! Serve her right for being so bloody picky!

Stuff like this makes me sad.
Sure we all have our favorites. I'm a huge lover of Piggies with crazy hair but there's a limit.
All piggies are cute and lovely :( I'd love one of any breed or colour, at least.

I dunno, it bugs me that people can be so picky about animals.
They're living creatures...Not collectable items.
But maybe it's just me :(

Kind of off topic in a way, but I have a blind friend who has 9 cats. She loves them all of course - and as she says, their colour is irrelevant to someone who can't see so why should it make a difference to a sighted person. I would love my piggies (or cats) regardless of colour, breed, shape, size!

As you said Lulu - rather sad.

Whilst it's not something I'd do personally, I don't think it's so ridiculous to have it plastered word for word over another forum!

Plus there are many people who wouldn't drive over 300 miles to go to a rescue - that's not unusual at all. I'm not even sure I would - especially given the stress caused to the animal of the drive home. Many rescues in the UK will only rehome locally for that reason.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who was saddened at this. it's not someone i know personally, and i didn't want to carry on trying to get her to see the opposing side to only wanting a specific pig. i just think it's such a shame.
i do agree that it is a long journey, but i'm pretty sure those kinds of distances have been achieved by members on here before, to give homes to pigs they've never seen "in person."
idk. i guess if you do want a purebred pig it's fair enough, there was just something about the way it was worded that seemed really shallow.

To me that sounds like someone whos not really interested in guinea pigs at all :(

When I lost cyclopse and needed a friend for lucky, I wasn't bothered about the breed or colour as long as both pigs were happy, i knew i'd love whoever came into my house :(

That was the same with me after I lost Farquhar. I just wanted to give a needy piggie a safe and loving home and didnt care what colour or breed the piggie was.
