Just a bit of fun but the piggy bug is biting me hard right now please tell me how awful guinea pigs are and tell me why I shouldnt have any more :-P

When did you guys all catch the piggy bug?

Piggies are lovely Bekki and you can never EVER have too many and dont let anyone else tell you otherwise! We all need lots of piggies in our lives, there are so many poor piggies looking for loving homes, some have been through a terrible ordeal and need a fresh start :)) YOu have your own house, no landlord to worry about, so what excuse do you have?

x

Caught the bug many many years ago. If you feel you can pay for their food, housing, possible vets bills with no problems then yes take a look at your nearest rescue and see what lovely piggys need a new loving home.

I got the piggie bug a year into having Ptch & Putt and unftorunately once we had lost Pitch we knew we had space for another cage hence Cookie & Treacle from Walsall RSPCA - we haven't looked back since. I have to stop myself from getting more at times, I like to know I have enough time to dedicate to the four we have and know that during my life more little ones will find their way to us...

I wouldn't have no more than my five unless due to a change in circumstances. Especially as all my boars are separate so four cages is enough for me to clean out currently.

We only have 2 cages, but Meggy Moo's is like the giraffe house at a zoo rolleyes

If funds are low, you could re-mortgage. :)) xx

:))

Am not the best person to comment on this bearing in mind I have 16 pigs mallethead, like others say though if you have the means then go for it.

i shall send my mother round if you like she is doctor doom i also own my own house but i still feel like i should do as my mum says i dont know why, i hae 6 piggies in 4 cages i am re arranging the house round so i can have them in a more organised fashion and I'm secertly hoping it will give me room for a few more, i dont think there is any reason tonot fill ones house with small furries. xx

Come on guys you were meant to tell me how awful guinea pigs are and how they will take over my life and even enter my dreams to torture me!

Realistically no another pair is not an ideal option right now doesnt stop me seeing the most gorgeous pair of guinea pigs in my area on a free ad and stopping being able to think about them (they look healthy, in a 120cm cage, loads of hay, pellets in their bowl ... looks genuine) they're girls which means I wouldnt have them anyway my younger boars are squabbly they sure dont need girl smell to drive them bonkers! The piggy bug hit me before I even adopted my first piggles!

Bekki you plan to extend your house into a 3 or 4 bedroom, i still see no excuse :)) And piggies are no awful, they dont take over your life, they are lovely creatures. x

hahaha I cant afford to do the conversion just yet 1 person doesnt need a 4 bed! nahhh course they're not awful but they certainly try to take over your life!

Its not just you is it though? Its all of the piggies too, they will need atleast 2 rooms! A girls room and a boys room! x

My girls and boys are both in the same out building and the boys don't get frustrated at all.

This is true! Or I can just have boars and make them all share like a nasty mummy. My two pairs of boys share a double hutch outdoors I mean who really wants neighbours above in a block of flats eh the pigs are complaining! Guess I should give them a room each!

My older boars shared a room and a run (though not at the same time) with my ladies and those were fine. My young lads are very temperamental with each other :-)

Or have neutered boars with your girls - that is how I get my boar fix! ;)

The piggies have certainly taken over half of our living room, most of the fridge, nearly all of the cubby hole for supplies and the better part of the kitchen table for the washed bedding, lacking space in the cubby hole... But I'm not rueing being able to finally realising my childhood dream of having a piggy group, never mind that said group has now spawned some side groups for special needs piggies!

There is no known antidote to the piggy bug... :))

I started out with 3 then 6 and now i'm at 19 boys and they are horrendous creatures, eat me out of house and home, can't hear myself think for the constant wheeks as I sneak around my house even in the dead of night, not to mention they insist on giving me piggy kisses and want snuggles, even had to take photos on holiday with me to remind me of the horrible critters :)) ;)

I think I'm more of a boar kind of person thankfully as the only rescue (and even the big green chain adoption centre) only have boars ever ladies dont exist up north! I have rabbits in the same house/yard as the piggies so most rescues wont rehome to me of the only Piggy Bank approved rescue is NEGPR who only have boars so it would be difficult to build up a herd up. If the right pair of piggies does appear whether male or female they'd be considered as I have 3 suitable hutches outside for summer and can fit 3 x 120cm cages inside in winter I need my OH to move in, that would mean finances were fab and I could but apparently that isnt a reason for him to move in! Need to get with somebody off here then more piggies would never be an issue!

One of our chickens..( in chicken heaven now) reminded me of guinea pigs as she made a similar wheeking sound. Ths brough memories of my childhood and thats why I decided to get 2. I was luckily directed to a great rescue in Nov last year and I have to say I have adored them ever since. I would only really want 2 piggies at the moment as although both me and my husband work, after reading about the vets bills some of you end up with I just couldn't afford to have anymore.

Now as for the reasons why you shouldnt have them...... wheeking as soon as you chop (even quietly) any piece of anything in the kitchen from 6am in the morning!(Not a problem for me as I am an early bird) The constant in and out of the garden just to catch a glimpse of their little cute faces and nice rounded little piggy bums! (This can take many hours up in the day when I should otherwise be cleaning) ; ) The time I spend on this forum chatting to other piggy enthusiasts when again I should of course be doing the cleaning! Having to sort out adopted piggy parents when we go away and then having to convince these people who have falled in love with them (it always happens) that they are my piggys and I want them back!

I would not ever be without piggys!

Ha ha I'm not in the best place to comment on this either as I now have 6 piggies! :)) xx

I find it really relaxing just sitting watching them pootling about their cage nomming hay etc. I love having a larger herd - although it was very much unplanned - watching all their interactions etc is brilliant.

I'm all about the boys, only ever have boys as rescues tend to be full of them as everyone seems to want girls as they can live in groups but I have my boys in small groups and they get along fine. I could sit and watch them all day they make me laugh so much how they interact with their neighbours (mine are in C&C cages) and share hay and food through the bars I couldn't be without any of them :)

If my two younger boars stop squabbling as they get a little older I may fill the spare third hutch its all ready to have piggies in! The two pairs interact with each other when they're out in the run via the bars sooooo cute. I love the boys its true that most people want girls, I wanted girls originally but I fell for Peppa and George at NEGPR so I got them!

Once you get past 15 months if quietens down a lot, I find the first 8 months with some can be make or break but once you get past that it gets quieter as they mature and their personalities come out :)

I found that pretty much my older boars (3-3.5) calmed down at around 1.5-2 their exact age is unknown now they're quirky and like an old married couple totally hilarious to watch. The younger lads are about 1-1.5 so should calm down but I'm keeping a spare hutch for now :-)

I have one set of boys (rescues) so age is unknown but around 18 months old and they love all other guinea pigs and regularly go in with some of the other boys outside one group in particular (a trio) they love and all get along, the duo used to always find a way into the other piggies side of the run which was hilarious to watch, no one believed me they could climb :))

My 4 managed to get together in the run, they got over a grid! They actually all got along just fine in the run!
